Going this weekend for my intro class, any suggestions?
You keep hearing this, but seriously, bring money :), get plenty of sleep, don't drive all night and attend the class the next morning, or wake up in the middle of the night to save the cost of a motel room
I did my sidemount cert a couple of weeks ago I think I have my rig adjusted and trim, I am planning on diving the day before class to make sure things are working due to the adjustment I made since sidemount class.
Given that you've taken an OW side mount class, don't take your side mount rig into side mount passage until you've reached the Abe Davis level and had some side mount instruction. I'd rather not see another "diver missing" thread or even another "Edd saves another diver" thread.

Oh, and try not to die.
I like the idea of arrival a day early. Get rest, situate your gear, check batteries, use that extra money when needed, rest again. Showing up out of a hotel room instead of a car ride is great advice.
READ your materials. KNOW them. If you expect the instructor to TEACH all this (instead of expanding and making clear and insuring you "got it"), you may be overwhelmed.
PRACTICE the stuff out of water!
Dive without your mask on. Close your eyes and navigate by touch. Review the underwater communications signs and light signals.
All good advice on this thread.
Be as prepared as you can be - time with your instructor is short and expensive, and you don't want to waste any of it going over stuff you could have learned in advance. The better prepared you are, the better experience you'll have.
Be safe and have fun!
I completed the overhead sidemount and open water so I have done both, thanks for all the good advice.
Thanks for all advice it all sounds great.
How did you do a overhead SM with out being cave certified to start with?? Yea...practice alot...just when you think you got it, you dont....
Cavern, I assume.
My SM required cave pen...idk....
You can do Openwater SM, then Cavern, then Intro Cave. You can do Intro to Tech before Cavern too.
Yea I know you can do OW SM but I didnt know you could do OH SM before at least intro...I dont care just didnt know...
Yep, although its not as common. Idc either, please don't mistake my tone, I'm not acting like smartypants man. :)
I was mentored in SM before a class was in place, then took Cavern in SM, then Intro and onward.
It may depend on agency?
Yea I did SM from cavern on. I took a OW SM class then went to Edd and took his SM class. NO NO, im just curious as my wife is just starting out. I just wasnt aware you could do an overhead class before cave. I know cavern is overhead but not what I had pictured is all...hey, if it works and is SAFE, go for it.
I was mentored and doing my overhead side mount and cavern in nov. I'll report back on the course when I complete it
Cool Cool....hope all goes well and good luck to all of you....
I'm trying to get my wife in ow class too, would prefer if she did ow sm for the safety and redundancy factors, but she will NEVER go into the OH, lol. She says I take her two biggest fears, suffocation and tight spaces... And make a hobby out of it! She suspects I invented Cave Diving to get time away. Wish I could say I thought of it first.... Kidding.
lol, yea me to...i love it for the time away from those damn women, now the wife says im tired of just sitting here, I wanna do it, I said what..o hell I was just about to get out of cave diving...she said o good, I can have your stuff and save money...WTF over
Lol.....
Tell her she can "buy" it, and use that money for a single seat motorcycle, airplane, gyrocopter, ultralight,.powered parachute , etc.
My wife is completely uncomfortable under water so cave diving definitely won't work. But we will be doing some dry caving next year
Id send mine in the cut the line but make sure Edd is tied up...lol..jk
Mine keeps stealing my trilobites... She says she likes to use them for work. Hmmmm..... Maybe she's trying to collect on an insurance policy? Lol
