lost or stolen deco bottle

I am posting this for a friend:

A Luxfer Aluminum 30 with an "Oxygen" tank wrap was taken Thursday 7/29/05 between 6:30 pm and 6:45 pm from underwater next to the stairs at Little Devils. If this was picked up on accident by a fellow diver then please return it to the front desk at Ginnie. It had a DR regulator and SPG as well as a DR stage strap. The tank was well used and the yellow paint was flaking off. If you have seen or run across this bottle I would appreciate it if you would return it to me.

Our best guess is that if it was stolen, it was probably someone parked over at Turkey Roost, and a lone snorkler was seen swimming in the run at that time.

That really stinks if it was stolen...

We dove Ginnie last weekend and even though it was hot and a hassle, we all carried or AL 40's to and from the dive, there is no need to tempt fate with the latest rash of "disappearances" there.

I hope it gets recovered. BTW, is your frind's name on the cylinder?

No - his name was not on the cylinder. It wasn't even his cylinder-he was borrowing it.

I was there last night, and I don't remember anything out of the ordinary. There weren't even that many people there (cave divers or others).

We need to have then give us as many consecutive numbered bands as we need for our stuff. Then they need to have REAL security checking people.. ! if they have dive equipment and no Dive band they take it.

If they have a dive band that the numbers don't match they take it to until the guy can explain why his band does not match.

Just make it open season on thieves...

Maybe they can get former SS officers as advisors.

It's getting to the point on weekends that you have to bring a f#$%ing steel cable and an combination lock to chain you stuff to the steps. They need to enforce NO TUBERS on the left hand set of steps, and have someone in the ginnie staff on post there to watch out for divers entry and their gear. :evil:

This is not a new problem. I first dived Ginnie - then known as Jenny in the early 1970's -- stuff was getting ripped off then too. Perhaps we, as cave divers can be a bit more pro-active and not leave our gear lying around. Would you leave your stuff lying around at Epcot?

Look around next time you are there and count patrons. It would be something like 150 campers & tubers 5 cave divers.

Let us hope they don't ever decide to shut the place down to cave divers.

Well if Rose, et. al are aware of the things being stolen then forget about it! Jim's right. - the cheese with whine thing. I guess I got a bit annoyed when some drunk girl was rough housing with some guy on the divers step. She was straddling the arm rail while I was trying to exit. A staffer was nearby. She 'bout sat on my head - which would've really hurt both of us. I was disgusted but my dive buddy John was jealous. I think he wished he were in my place. :roll: :lol:

It didn't do a thing for the GUE instructor who had his O2 bottle stolen there a couple of years ago

Leave a tank filled with Sarin or VX around the stairs, if anybody steals it and breaths it, they'll never steal anything again. If more of us did that, Ginnie would soon not have any problems with thefts.

I don't think that anyone is asking that Ginnie Springs ensure (or insure) their gear. But it would be nice if they would make a little bit of effort.

I realize that the money I pay for diving there is not a large percentage of their income, but if you add in the camping fees for 3+ trips a year for my family, the tube rentals, ice, firewood, etc associated with these weekend trips, now we are talking real money. But wait, I forgot the two masks, the reel, the 3 lights, the Tshirts, the air fills, the regulator, the reg rentals, the tank rentals, the cavern class thru one of their instructors, a few Zknifes, quite a few visits to the Ginnie Deli, more camping fees during two courses taken there, and several hundred dollars of my money that I haven't remembered yet.

I have always had a GREAT experience dealing with the Ginnie staff one on one. But this, I guess you could call it, corporate attitude, leaves me incredulous. Yeah, we might not be the greatest percentage of their busines. But I bet you they would miss our dollars if they were gone.

Why are we paying more to dive there then a tuber does? What are we getting for it? If they are not going to make it safe or more convenient for the divers, then they should stop charging us more than a tuber.

I find it very safe (if you use common sense!) and very convenient, plus the staff there are great :D

If you don't like it, don't dive there and as others have said just be glad for what we have....

And at $300 for a pass that's less than a dollar a dive/day, plus you got nitrox and mix right down the road ;-)

I don't see any way you can expect Ginnie to do anything. My answer is don't leave anything unattended. Both buddies take their stages, scooters, whatever, to the water. One stays while the other gets his doubles. When he gets back to the water, the other buddy gets his doubles.

It takes an extra three minutes.

I hate thieves a bit more than liars (open season idea is still on my list). But like Rich said, a little common sense in keeping your stuff secured goes a long way. Also, if you keep your eyes open for other cavers'stuff you may avert a lot of lost gear.

A while back at Ginnie my husband saw an obviously non-diver take and place a deco bottle in his car. We told the diver who was looking for it about it (gave tag number, make and model too!) she recovered it and got a weak apology and stupid excuse from the would-be thief and no harm done.
I think if we all looked out for not just our stuff, things would not grow legs so often.

It is the cave divers who walk in & buy a $500 light. It is the cave divers who drive 15 hours to get there, then pay for camping & diving, just to dive there. And we are the pain in the butt because we don't like having stuff stolen, and make noise about it when it happens? Yeah, Ginnie sees a whole lot more income from tubers, swimmers, & campers than from cave divers, but they DO make money off of us.

Well take your 02 bottle with you deeper into the cave to keep open water divers from getting it. I have seen this method work pretty well. I notice guys that dive with buddies, one stays at the steps and watches gear and the other takes his stuff to the water, then they swap places and the other watches while the other goes and gets his or her gear. And last but not least, if you solo dive a lot like me take a cart and load everything you need in it and haul it down to water. leave the cart if they steal the cart it's only $30 not $300 or $400 for tank and reg. But again I am no expert or anything I just would rather lose $30 plus. Before I got my cart I asked a local that is there and I have never not seen plenty of people there I asked them if they keep an eye on my gear I will give them $5 to watch it and make sure nobody but me touches it. Trust me the beer drinkers like that $5 a lot and I would rather pay $5 to a beer drinker than have someone to steal my stuff.

The first time I dove Ginnie another cave diver had an O2 bottle stolen right out from under BOTH of our noses off the steps near little devil.

He put it in the water and clipped it off (I SAW HIM do it from the picnic table), came back, shrugged on his doubles (elapsed time < 3 minutes) and walked back to the steps. It was gone.

Needless to say he was pissed. I was more than annoyed and dismayed, because that little incident said to me that whoever took it was casing the area and knew EXACTLY when to pounce. It was a planned theft - not a "snatch and go."

I've not had anything stolen there, but I treat Ginnie like the south side of Chicago, almost. If its not locked up with either a Smith and Wesson or a loud alarm guarding it, or a warm breathing body with its eyes literally on it, someone's likely to take it.

Could Ginnie do something about that? Oh yeah. Will they? As others have said, "oh no."

Bottom line is that divers pay 5x the price of a tuber to go there but we certainly don't get any more in the way of service - and IMHO I think we should. We spend more to on "incidentals", and ours are expensive (that $500+ light has a hell of a margin on it - how much does that pen the camper buys have?)

I'd spend a lot more time and money there but for this issue. Rose may just shrug at that idea, but I bet I'm not alone in that assessment. Heck, for what it'd cost me to hang around there for a week I'd be better off dragging a pontoon boat down there on a trailer, camping somewhere else, and coming in off the water - eschewing the facilities entirely (and the fees.)

Makes it harder to steal things too, if you chain them to the boat and/or leave someone topside when you're diving.....

Well I wasn't talking about watching it from a distance or anything I was talking about keeping your eye on it not the chick in the thong or G-string but to keep your eyes glued to it.

Ok it's time to get down and dirty......ya can't booby trap a bottle
( explosives or 100,000 volts of electricity ) to thwart the thieves....but how bout some old fashioned payback.....ok so who wants to donate an old deco bottle and reg and lets fill it with some vile substance like cat pee and poop....................let em steal it and take a nice long draw on that puppy....maybe that will teach em to mess with us anymore.

I was wondering what does the state park has to offer more than Ginnie?? A required buddy to dive with ? Or the rangers who asked me reenter the cave while exiting at Maneettee, in case that there is a Maneette ???

Sarin and VX are the standard US nerve gasses from the 60's, there is still some of it stored in the southeastern US. If the DOD won't give some of it away to cavedivers, no problem, Sarin is not that hard to make youself. Mustard Gas is also an option.

Well we couldn't be that lucky.....but you know how thieves are.....they grab and run....I doubt they use it for diving.....Jus grab and run

I have a 63 cf AL that was one of the recall cylinders by Luxfer, it has an old unserviceable valve on it and I use it as a door stop in my workshop... anyone has an old crappy reg we can attach to it?

Then again, I think it would be interesting to do a search of pawn shops within a 50 mile radius of the springs, I bet there are not too many of those thieves that are going to actually go diving with the stuff but can get some pretty decent beer or drug money from pawning a stage and reg...

Well, for $85, I have access to 5 parks that offer cave/cavern diving, & those are just the ones that I know of offhand. Also note that I didn't say that the state parks offered "more" than Ginnie. What they do have to offer is a much lower price for a larger choice of systems. Ginnie offsets that to some extent by such things as allowing solo diving (if that is what you want), having an onsite dive shop, yada yada.

Don't get me wrong, you guys have a really great cave site, & awesome amenities, but as a customer, it kind of bites to be told that cave divers are not the major bacon bringer for Ginnie, and that we should just be grateful that we are allowed to dive there. So what are we, chopped liver?:-D

At no time, I agreed that we should be thankfull for being allowed to dive at Ginnie. Nevertheless, I do beleive that $20 does not buy me a bodyguard for my gear. Espesially when half of that goes towards insurance agaist lawsuits.

Besides the other on site comodities, you and I as cavediver customers, get a few advantages over other costomers. For instance, dive fees for cave divers is less than OW. And for those who actually have annual passes things are even more conviniet.
On pick times during weekends, I have seen Ginnie employees litterally ingoring campers, tubers, and hot chicks just to get a carpass and wrist bands to cavedivers. And that is when the average customer waits about 20 minutes to be told that he/she should fill paperwork rent a tube. Furthermore, tubers did not have a riot when Ginnie managment closed the Devil parking lot for everybody else but cave divers (that was during the floods). However, we as cave divers are always right because we dive on overhead enviroment and we don't use snorkels, and that makes as special.
I find so hard to undestand, why we are able to take great responsibilities while being in absolute darkness and hundered of feet from the nearest natural air supply, but cannot be responsible about our gear on the surface in midle of the day. Unfortunatly during summer Ginnie is busy as hell. It is up to us to either dive Ginnie and be aware of assholes thieves or dive a state park where you are asked to not exit the cave if you see a manattee swiming around (of course Peacock is different story).

But anyway, we both are waisting our time, because complaining is adictive and makes you feel good. Even if ginnie puts a sniper on the roof or brings SWAT, we will find something else to complain like having someone to carry our deco bottles and someone else to zip our drysuit.

Good points from someone who works at Ginnie and has helped me in the past. I do appricate some of the things you have pointed out. I just wish you did not have to watch you gear so closely. Maybe a place to lock equipement up like scooters and o2 bottles or cameras mounted near the steps might be something to consider. I do believe though that there are some people that case it at times. It would sure be nice to catch them.

Maybe a place to lock equipement up like scooters and o2 bottles or cameras mounted near the steps might be something to consider. I do believe though that there are some people that case it at times. It would sure be nice to catch them.

One approach would be for US (from time to time) to adopt some civvy's attire; say, a Kenny Chesney t-shirt and a Stars & Bars hat, and spend some time unobtrusively 'eye'ing' the steps during SI's and otherwise unoccupied preening time...

No Miami Vice take-downs, just a snap of the digi-cam and a license plate record should suffice...

I'd be HAPPY to take the first shift...

Ok, I think this will work....what you do is get your suit on and carry your stuff down to the stairs at little devil, and throw it in the water. If there are any other people present, just blow their brains out with the locked and loaded M1911 Colt 45 you have in your right bellows pocket (cause well you're DIR trained). OK it's all smoky, and the water's full of blood and gore, but the flow will get rid of the mess, so just walk back up to the platform and loudly state that you got another clip in the truck and your gear better be there when you get back. Oh yeah be careful not hit any 02 bottles or scooters by accident. BTW no guns in the state parks but they're OK at devils.

As long as we're being nit-picky, the flag traditionally known as the Confederate Battle Flag is properly known as the Confederate Naval Jack. Battle flags were traditionally square, and Navy jacks were rectangular.

For those of you anywhere near Columbus, Georgia, the National Civil War Naval Museum is located here, and it's easily worth a 100-mile drive to see. Next month they are putting up a new exhibit of Civil War flags.

Hydroshocks will get you into trouble the ony dir approved 45ACP is the remington 230 grain copper jacketed ball ammo, never a jam. When I bag a big one I wanna get a clean wound in the head so there isn't all that lead splattering off the bone spoiling the meat. Oh yeah make sure you get the glands out from the armpit area ASAP or the meat will get tough.

Well, every day now I keep seeing that a new post has arrived to my thread here. At first I thought that someone may have known what happened to the bottle. But no, no. I have obviously lost hope by now.


I really appreciate everyone's concern - especially those willing to commit murder to keep people from stealing more of my tanks.

Well too bad deco bottles were not like this guys camera below:

On July 23 at approximately 9:30 am, my dive partner and I descended
on the Bibb in Key Largo. When we reached the sand [ 134 ft ], we
both realized the Moto-Marine underwater camera was no longer
strapped to my dive partner's arm. The current going down the line
was ripping - as usual! When we reached the sand, the ship had
blocked the current. I looked around in the sand and could not see
the camera. At that depth, even on 28% NITROX, our bottom time was
short. We headed up to the 90 ft level and kept looking for the
camera. No Luck.

Last night, my dive partner got a phone call from a diver in Delray
Beach. While diving during mini-season, July 27, this diver found
the camera and attached phone number and called.

Key Largo -> Delary Beach = @ 116 miles
July 23 - July 27 = 4 days = 96 hours
116 miles / 96 hours = 1.2 mph

I really have a hard time believing that this heavy camera [ no
strobe, just the camera ] stayed afloat in the current!!

That was cold.... did you tell the seller that at least one was a stolen item?

Knock on wood, we have only lost one reel, it was a red primary from DR, had names all over it (stamped on the metal at that), lost at Peacock, I think we may have left it on a picnic table. No one returned it or left it with the ranger or at Cathy's where things misplaced find their way sometimes.

That was about 4 years ago. Now we do a full sweep to insure nothing is left behind nor anything missing before leaving, call me paranoid....

Well, I have got a double serving of humble pie in front of me, and once I am done with that, I think I will warm up some crow & eat that too.

Last night my buddy & I got out of Ginnie Spring after a dive. I walked up to the gear table, got out of my harness, unclipped & removed all of the various bits of gear from my person & the harness, got back into my harness & carried my tanks, regs, etc. to my truck, put them in the truck, got out of my wetsuit, dried off & left.

Fast forward to this morning. I am almost to Peacock, Ginnie calls, "Hey dude, we have your gear here". "Huh? What gear?!" He describes it, and almost immediately, I realize that I left my masks, 2 reels, a spool, a thigh pocket, fins, AND a dive computer sitting on the bench last night. :oops: Someone, I think that it was a Ginnie employee, found it & turned it in. If someone knows who that person is, please let me know. I owe them a large quantity of their favorite adult beverage next time I am up there.

Anyway, I gotta go, lots of foul tasting pie left.....

There are so many patrons at Ginnie any given weekend that it would be impossible for them to watch everyone. The best thing to do is keep honest people honest and lock your stuff up, and don't leave anything un-attended.
