Does anyone know where the ice room is at Ginnie? I had a friend tell me about it, but I could'nt find it on my map.
It is in the Devil's Eye system. To get to it, you need to go up the Hill 400 line and continue past the 90 to the old "double lines" jump to the left. The jump to the Ice Room is a couple of hundred feet down this line just past the bedding plain to the right. The last time I went to the Ice Room the line to it started in a slot above a limerock slab. This line had two T's on the path to the Ice Room...right at both on the way in. This dive can be done in backmount, but would be best in a two man team. Visibility tends to be good only for the first diver on the 150' of tunnel past the two T's.

Thanks Lee. Is it a marked jump off the double lines?
John, the jump is not marked.....however if you enter Double Lines from the backside, after a coupla hundred feet, the line will make a 90 degree turn to the left, heading towards the back to back arrows and the jump to the Split. When the line makes that 90 deg turn look forward as if the line went straight and you'll see a limestone ledge, the line starts on the top of that ledge and is marked with a yellow line arrow.... as Lee stated stay to the right going in and the left coming out, and with good technique vis should be just fine. The line ends tied off to a memorial marker in a very cool room, either known as the "Ice Room" or the "Crystal Room".Quote:

Hey dude, when you said the backside of the double lines, is it the first line to the right thats a kinda long jump that circuits back to hill 400, or the farther line to the left of that? I think Dave McLaren and I will be up there Sat. possibly. We will probably get to Ginnie when they open to sign in, and head to your place for gas. Hope to see you.
John
John,
It is not the first jump that loops back to the main line. The correct jump to the right is about 100-150' in just past the short bedding plain. Like Rich said, when the line comes out of the low area and make a 90 left, look straight ahead and up into the limerock opening...the line starts there.
Lee
it also needs a stage unless you are rebreather diver :-)
You don't need no stinkin' stage to do that dive, just take the Coaster, Short Cut and sneak off behind the Bats through Skid Row...... :-DQuote:

Don't get me wrong here, but you might want to get a copy of Hancocks map and study it if you want to go to stuff north of the bats. I have no idea what your experience level is but I would learn all the passages up to the ice palace from both directions, and skid row can be really nasty, and you got to put in two jumps if I remember correctly on the line running through the ceiling to get to the ice palace that way, if you want a taste of it try the little circuit starting at the bats that comes out on hill 400, if it gets silty you don't have to go back through it. Also as others metioned it's about 2 foot high for about 50 foot or so right before the ice palace, and the line used to be pretty flimsy in there (been a while for me maybe new line by now) but your probably going to need ti on the way out if in backmount, so check it out good on the way in.
Sorry if I am coming off as dick but this post kinda scared me.
Sid digging a hole cause it's good to be in the dirt.

Hehe, i remember that SID's dive report about a reel fallen in a nice puffy silt and people waching it falling :-DQuote:

Now about stage. Silt it up in Linns line and get out trough 6 jumps. I'm not that brave.
Rich, feel free to use my reel in accordance with its direct product's guidelines - to dry cloth :-)
What can I say, I'm an old lady sometimes, like I said I don't know the guy as far as I know so I have the tendency to throw out the caution flag, no harm intended. Just envisioned somebody getting really lost, I'm kinda funny about that. So let's go do a mainland scooter stage with a gear removal circuit out through sweet surprise (just kidding, I be turning in the junction room these days) really need to get back to devils but the Mill pond got all new cave so it gets tuff making it to high springs.Quote:

Which brings up that timeless question, how do you carry 10 jump reels (3 more to come out via the Double Lines circuit and down the Hill 400 plus 1 extra as per protocol) plus 2 clothes pins for the T's?Quote:

And yet another great reason to have a buddie, or spool caddy depending on how you look at it. Personally I would go hill 400 (1), and jump in on the left at 1300 feet or so (2), ice palace jump at the "mini-lips" (3) and jst leave them all in for a double lines circuit second dive. Last time we went rollercoaster route I think we had six spools in going through skid row, and of course there was the exciting moment where the unfallable enclosed spool popped apart while connecting the line in the ceiling in there and we were stuck in the ceiling for about 5 minutes while it got re-assembled, amazing the amount of silt the guts of that spool made hitting the clay. Sid getting a jones for devils, anybody got some diazapam?
The few times I've been up twds Sherwood Split, I've just taken the 'highway' by Main Line to Hill 400 then jump (left) to Lins Line half way btw Hill 400 and Bats, and finally from Lins to Double Arrow Lines ...that's only three jumps prior to the jump to the Ice Room.
I do bring a stage for that swim though (because I' such a drysuit newbie gas hog).
The flow is still very low up in that area (as of Saturday)
Your tanks must be bigger then mine. I always bring a stage to do the Ice Room.Quote:

It's backmountable, and as has been said, the floor on the duck-under is pretty well worn, making it all the more back mountable. For a section of the cave that is pretty remote, it's very beat up. Also, a stage is recommended. There's no such thing as too much gas.
Peace, Bless, and maximum respect,

True true, there is no such thing as too much gas ...and *cannot fight it* there is always help should you find yourself ...or your pet with too much gas...
