Nick's using a wide angle lens that makes everything look further away than it is, but he also takes an amazing amount of light down in the cave with him.
I was just floored at how a lot of these pictures were done -- we'd just be diving along, and suddenly Nick would spin around and bring the camera up and "snap, snap, snap" and then he'd turn around and keep diving. Nothing was composed or posed or orchestrated, and he got that monster camera through some places I had trouble getting MYSELF. Mr. Ambrose is one talented photographer, and I was lucky to get to dive with him.
My late buddy and I have several cave shots that are very good and have been published in amateur venues. I still shoot film using a Nikonos V strictly by SB105 flash guide number due to the total darkness. With a Ikelite 200 slave and remote sensor mounted on the back of the diving subject we've gotten some great shots in Mexico and Florida. It is really very easy and you will have far better success than open water.
