Does anyone have any information about Procambarus orcinus aka Woodville Karst Crayfish?
Diving the Wakulla area today I found one about 4 inches in length carrying eggs and now I'm interested in learning more about them. If I cant find info I may start to research them to gain some more knowledge on the critters in our systems.
Thanks
Ben
probably not much more info than you already know, but this crayfish taxonomy site is pretty cool:

Thanks for the info. Yes the site is vague and doesent provide a whole lot on them. Anyone else have any good suggestions/links?
Ben, I think this is what you are looking for.

If I recall the 1985(?) edition of Bremleyana has something. Can't recall for sure which issue.

a report on the troglobitic decapods crustaceans.....it's a big file....pg 132 has info on the P. orcinus.
Thanks Guys! If you come up with anything else let me know!

from the crayfish taxonomy website all I could find is this:
"Comments: Locality- Sinkhole pond, 3 miles (4.8 km) southwest of Tallahassee on State Route 20, Leon County, Florida (now bebeath runway at airport)."
There used to be a sinkhole where the airport is???
Lets go! Im sure they wont mind us out there, no need to ask.
That no tresspassin sign doesent apply to us :)
BTW the fence there is just there to keep the loose animals out.
The state let them fill a sinkhole that had a one-of-a-kind crayfish?!Quote:

Not suprised though, the DEP approved a local development to drain right into one of the sinks down in wakulla. The WCDC, Friends of Wakulla Springs, And a few others are trying to fight this as we speak and get it fixed.
The biggest crawfish I've ever seen was in Jackson Blue.Quote:

Also, until the species finds its way on a government list, it officially does not exist. If you miss the townhall meeting, fail to mention the existence of a species to officials, etc., well, no one will ever know.
Development is filling in sinkholes every day - no telling how many in any one area, let alone a state. We've seen sinkholes filled in quite a bit around here - and we know they contain a species of cavefish that is unique to this area, on the "in need of management" list of the state and federal EPA. Yet still they fill em in....
I wrote a short article awhile back on cave crayfish - it was published in the NACD journal and it's posted on the NACD website. It includes a few references for further reading. Jennifer Buhay, a cave biologist (Indiana University; [email protected]), specializes in cave crayfish, send her an email.
I also have a couple of articles, but too long to attach to a pm. email me at [email protected] and I'll email what I have to you.
