Hi Buddies,
I'm now using a 21w and thinking of up-grade to a 50w because my whole team think it will give us a more enjoyable dive. But some people said it's too bright for cave diving. Are there anybody using one and please advice.
Thanks,
Gallup

where do you cave dive?
david
Mostly in China and Philippine :)
If everyone on the team has the same bright light, and the passages are large, then brightness isn't an issue. If one diver has a bright light, and the rest only have dim lights, then signaling is a problem.
a 50w light would be blinding in small cave.
My instructor had one and it is massive!!
A get a snow-blind headache with that kind of light. I am a hold out and still use the 10w,and my eyes adjust very well, and see detail.
I don't think I would want that big of a light in the caves in FL..at least the ones I dive. Something about not having the entire passage lit up makes it more fun. Heck I like to shield my light at times and just enjoy the ambient light from my dive buddy.
I use Dual 50 watt HID's for video lights and anyone who's dove with me or been in the same cave will say it's blinding and looks like a train is coming at you! It is a lot of light. If you have a wet disconnect (EO cord) on your canister you can just get a 50 watt head, and then be able to choose what you want to use on the dive, your 21 or 50 but if you do that depending on your canister size your battery wont last you as long as it would using your 21 watt light.
Personally I don't think its needed if your diving with 2 or 3 divers all using 21-35 watt lights =) I still dive with a 10watt when i'm doing fun dives
Good luck!
Ya , I still use a 10W too.
Gads , a 50W ??? !!! (EEK)
That would look like a train headlight. (wowza)

Either you would be pretty limited in burn time or else you'd have to have a fairly large canister. Doesn't seem worth it unless your taking pictures or video. Disclaimer: I also still have a 10 Watt, so could be considered old fashioned :)
I took ARY's 50 watt homemade HID in a sidemount cave we were laying line in to shoot some video and the one thing I can say is you wont miss any side passages in small cave with a light that big. :)
I have one of these lights but use it sparingly:
it does hide the lights of divers behind me. For safety I prefer to be the rear diver all the time
it is too bright for small areas, great for large rooms
you can take non flash photos in caves which can give more realistic cave pictures of what we actually see / experience
it will blind oncoming divers such much they will find you after the dive
you will get noticed.
it's fun to use and see more things
As easy to carry as any other light
Haha.....
Seems most people don't like 50w HID :)
All my buddies want to change to a brighter light (we are using 18w & 21w now) as the rock on some of the cave here are black in color.
So, are there any big difference between 21w & 35w?
Oh so thats your light in the cave diving museum! lol
I know I chose Barry to interview for this video but if you want to learn A LOT about canisters, NiMH vs Lithium and HID vs LED take a look at this video, its informational.
