Peacock is open to cave diving (no OW or cavern). Viz is 20',and very tannic. Lines are in good shape, but there is debris on the line, and some line is burried in the sand, but we fixed a lot of it. Very loose silt present, with percolation noticable on exit. Be safe.
Message brought to you care of the NFSA
Kelly, We all thank you and the NFSA for the diligence and concerns. It's good to be diving again. Yeeeeeeee haaaaaaa
I did my usual fauna count,I just reported what I saw.Quote:

This is a copy of my other post:
I should add that the Peanut line is in overall good shape from the entrance to the end of line..meaning intact, we fixed a few traps and pulled it out of the mud / clay in many places.Quote:
My dive buddy and I were standing on the steps at Peacock at approx 1:15pm thinking about how much fun it would be to dive Peacock. The park ranger walked down the steps and asked how how we were doing....we mentioned that it would be great to be able to dive. She responded with...it just opened!
Well, we couldn't gear up fast enough!
Dove the Peanut line to the end of the line.
Vis 30ft with heavy particulate matter that eats up your light. The walls & ceiling are covered with very loose silt / the gold line is covered with organic matter and was a more brown color than gold...meaning, it looks like it was actually growing. Numerous dead fish & dead white cave crawfish.
All in all, it was a GREAT dive. We were the first ones in (and only today) since the powers that be opened it. Talking with the ranger after the dive they made it open to Full Cave only....this being a good thing in my opinion cause it could silt out VERY easy.
Despite being dark and cruddy, it was pretty cool being inside, no hand prints, body prints, the scape marks on the ceiling / walls were not visable due to the sediment / silt on them.
Would dive it again tomorrow if we didn't have to pull four jumps out of Ginnie.
I think we actually cleaned off every line arrow from the sign to the end of the line. The end of the line just past the survey tag (Peanut Restriction) was under at least a foot of mud / clay. It made us feel a little better on the way out shining a light on something bright yellow.
We were going to just over & swim up to Challenge, but decided to turn the dive. There is someones jump form EOL to the Main Line to Challenge...think the initials are BB. Whoever placed that jump has had it in place for awhile...lol.
The more people that get in the system the more crap is going to keep getting stirred up until it can clean out. There was zero flow, you could watch chunks of floating crap just hang without moving.
Since there is no flow due to the river rising, the stuff won't move out. Personally I like the "crap" because it is filling in the errant hand print or fin mark from before the flood.Quote:

sounds gnarly :)
Similarly, I left a spool from the Crossover to Dark Water Tunnel just before the flood. If it is still there and someone wants to pull it and let me know it would be appreciated. Thanks.

On route, we cleaned off the lines (some looked like something from a haunted house!), and checked placements. When we got to Pothole, we saw that all the deer bones had been washed away :( We did a search in the area, and found five of them, and put them back up on the ledge, but no sign of the skull :(
Throughout our dive visibility ranged from 20-30 feet, a bit better than Manatee Springs usually is. There was some particulate on the floors in places, but this is heavy and settled quickly. At one point there were more than seven divers (three teams) in the same passage and again on deco in the cavern. The whole cavern was lighted up by the sun.
Is Peacock open to Intro divers at this point, or any idea when it will be?
My guess would be a couple of weeks after the river starts to go back down. Hopefully by the 4th of July.Quote:

I saw that in the original post, but I also saw a picture of the sign posted at Peacock that said open to full cave only.Quote:

The question is, to me, what constitutes "Full Cave," since no agency currently issues a certification with that title?
you causing trouble again ;)Quote:

Just trying not to go above my level of certification and cause problems.
You're right, after seeing your photo, I would have to assume the same. It's not worded very well is it?Quote:

I called Rick the Ranger there and here is the current status of Peacock Springs:
Its open to everyone except cavern and open water divers. Intro, Basic, Apprentice, Full, Cave I, Cave II, Cave III, and all cavern & cave instructors with classes are good to go....
Dive Safe!
Ditto on that I also talked with Rick.Quote:

We cleaned some line on both sides and move tree limbs. There are patches of "blue-purple" fluffy stuff on the floor here & there????. (Bobbi said its dead fish) . Vis = avr. 20' then & tanic. FYI like mentioned before there is alot of silt on everything and no current. All flood damage to house is fixed, and we are back to diving full time again
Speaking of Peacock:
Since I am back to my Boston routine next week...
Would anyone be diving Peacock tomorrow (Fri Jun 4) or Saturday ???
I would like to take a peek in my FAV cave (SMILE)
Beano
Average viz = 20': and now it's raining .
When conditions are already this bad, how does the rain affect the visability?
jean0 - if you don't get any bites on diving at Peacock, a bunch of us will be diving the Wakulla area if you're interested.
Thanks buddy !!! (SMILE)Quote:
