Scenario: OW diver asks you where is the cave.

Just had a situation where I was on the Mill Pond and had a couple ask me where the springs on the pond were located. We started talking without me giving out any information. I asked them what they were planning on doing. They were just snorkeling and I confirmed this by looking in there canoe. I then vaguely told them the location of the springs as I still wasn't sure whether they might plan to return at some point with tanks and gear. Although from talking to them I'm pretty sure they weren't scuba trained at all.

Really, do you know what happens to the VERY few OW divers that are rescued from certain death in a cave? Most give up diving all together and avoid water sports and suffer debilitating "terrors" for decades, the psychological consequences are life long.

The reason why people want to be calm and "reasonable" in situations like this is because they want that warm and fuzzy feeling that comes from handling a situation in the most PC of ways.....maybe if someone cuts in front of you at the Starbucks thats the right way to go but the problem is that we're talking about someones life and by taking the PC way you're really making the persons stupidity about your need to feel good about yourself......and that arrogant and selfish.

So in a situation where you don't have the time to become that wonderful mentor and quasi demigod there's one option, say what you must, do what you must including removing there second stage with a knife or punching them in the face, better to go home with a fat lip, bloody nose and banged up ego then to not go home at all.......

Now anyone with an IQ of over 50 is going to go home one pissed off individual but then there going to to some homework on the internet and that's when the :blackbar2 moment happens, and running to the light he will go and think WOW that guy who hit me might not be my best friend, he may be my only friend because he just saved my life.........

Now of course if women are involved and since they are a lot smarter then us knuckle draggers the entire situation will be handled without any violence whatsoever.

Hell, I've known certified full cave divers who've had issues and done this too.

ummm....save a life or go to jail for assualt.....tough choice.

this assumes the OW diver has a IQ over 50....if they are diving in caves where we have placed the GIANT WARNING SIGNS shaped like stop signs or have grim reapers on them....they may be mentally challenged. Darwinism will win the day since you can't fix stupid.

It depends on the cave. I usually use a bit of self-deprecation. At Manatee or Kitty: "This is a pretty dicey little hole. I have two weeks of cave diving training, and I would't dream of going in there without a professional guide!" At Peacock or Ginnie: "It starts out really pretty, but it gets deceptive in a hurry. I've had two weeks of cave diving training, and I'd be embarrassed to admit how many times I've had to use all of it to save myself." There is a reason why every class ends with a LOAS drill!
