One thing I would ask is that the Moderators be identified when a pst gets edited or deleted or a thread gets closed. Its hard to tell the players without a scorecard. There are some mods who post about their action in a thread, and others just close it or delete posts without identifying themselves.
In many (most? all?) cases, moderators post up to the other moderators what they've done. Sometimes moderators take quick action to avert a train wreck by moving a thread or some posts out of public view. Sometimes they're returned if a consensus of the moderators is to do that. Sometimes a moderator sees a big problem brewing but just doesn't have time to deal with it with as much intricacy as would be perfect.Quote:

Everyone tries to do their best. There's quite a diversity of viewpoints amidst the moderators. I think that's healthy. You can't please all the people all the time.
Sometimes actions have to be done as a moderator in an anonymous fashion in the name of civility.
I agree that some of the moderation lately has gone a bit far, but then again with all the crap on the forum it can make some people "trigger happy".
I figure this will start to settle down soon and the moderators that TJ and FW have selected will slowly fall back into the "normal" moderation prior to the immature storm.
Either way, we all know the CDF is the main forum for cave diving discussion, so get to it. Post some dang pics and stories for guys like me with a small child who have not been cave diving as much as I used to...
The over-moderation has been pretty much crap for the last year or so, IMO. Its also been very inconsistant.
If you have to tip-toe around loosely written forum rules in order to talk about the betterment of cave diving, things are pretty eskew.
OK, here is what I see. No one on here is 12 years old. We all know what is civil and what isn't. We all know what we can say to a person face-to-face and what the reactions will be.
If you can't control yourself then the moderators have to control what you say. We (the mods) are all different and have differing opinions and also have bad days when we get sick of the stuff. No one person can be on here 24-7 and our participation varies with our availability.
If you want to say something on here that would get a very unpleasant reaction if said face-to-face then go ahead. If you need someone to define what is civil for you then we will gladly do it for you. But if you will not control yourself then don't compalin about getting moderated. It is a consequence of your actions.
The other day I moderated something that I felt broke the rules and another moderator thought I went overboard. I was *trying* to follow the rules and be somewhat consistent. Moderators can't win for losing. We try to follow rules and be consistent. It's not at all perfect or cut and dried. What one person thinks is civil another might not.Quote:

I for one would like to thank the moderators for their (unpaid) service. Trying to keep CDF clean is like trying to clean the Augean Stables! It's a hopeless, dirty job. And a lot of it is judgement calls. Ask 10 cave divers for their opinion, and you get 11 different answers.
