If you get a video of the theft and a tag number, you don't need private vengeance. The local police can make an arrest and the local D.A. can prosecute. Almost any piece of dive is costly enough to make the theft a felony, which costs the perpetrator his civil rights. If it's a second offense, there's probably prison time as well.

SCOOTER thefts? Now that's personal. Steal my scooter, you better hope the cops find you first.....
One suggestion - the manufacturers should etch, engrave, or otherwise mark in some indelible way on EXPENSIVE and not easily-seen parts (e.g. the back of the motor, etc) a serial number.
Sooner or later its going to end up somewhere getting fixed or someone's going to take it apart. If Rodney, Ben and the other guys who make these all started demanding serial numbers to get parts......
I thought that once (against all previous experience). After being run off the road and attacked by 8 thugs from a truck who smashed my car window and attacked me and a friend of mine with a claw hammer and (calling the police imediately to file a report) having the cops ignore the situation and refuse to follow up on it or even trace the vehicle licence place to find the offenders and then having the sheriff's department tell us we couldn't even make a police report unless we had the offender's date of birth and social security number (we we actually traced down via the licence ourselves) only to be further ignored by the police - even when we were able to verify that the guy still lived at the listed address (contrary to the police report on the investigation).Quote:

As far as the 2nd offense theory goes it turns out this "gang" was already well known for breaking into vehicles and ripping off car radios - but didn't inspirre the cops to any effect of law enforcement past filing a report.
Rig a "bait" scooter with as much dynamite as will fit in it (that ought to be quite a bit!) and a motion sensor + timer.
Sufficient time for a "false trip" to get in there and disable it. Also enough time for the thief to get clear of the dive site (we wouldn't want to cave in the hole, you know) before it goes up.
Scratch one thief.
A short timer would work wonders on the get away car and driver.... :-DQuote:

It is a small comunity, anyone buying this type diving gear (scooter and stages) from E-Bay or local pawn shops should be suspicious of its provenience...

The problem with scooters is that as far as I know there are no serial numbers. Thus, there's no way for a buyer to find out if a unit is stolen, nor is there any way for a manufacturer to assist in tracking a stolen piece.
This is a MAJOR problem; these things are expensive enough that IMHO divers should DEMAND serialization. I know nobody has really cared because of the smallness of the community and such up until now, but we're now seeing the problem that arises from this lack of attention to "normal" commercial protocol.....

Most phones do not have a GPS in them but they can still be traced by triangulation with great accuracy. Unfortunately the cell companies WILL NOT DO IT without an ACTIVE police request to do so.
