I have considered getting certified as divemaster so I could have access to professional liability coverage through an agency in open water, but I'm doing less and less of it, so I'll pass.
If you're an OW instructor and you want to exploit it for the most fun go down to the islands or hop on a liveaboard... :) You don't make much money but it's a hell of a lifestyle!

Yeah, when I was filling out the paperwork for my OW class there was a question, "Are you interested in becoming a scuba instructor?" In the space under it I wrote, "Are you aware that I don't even know how to scuba dive myself?"Quote:

It seems as if the industry standard has become minimally experienced shake-and-bake instructors pushing people through quickie OW courses. It's no wonder that any popular OW site is a menagerie of clueless people flopping around kicking the bottom, and that only a small percentage of people who become OW certified are still diving five years later.
Fortunately there are some great OW instructors out there - you just have to be smart enough or lucky enough to find one. Tracy and I had an excellent OW instructor, and are still grateful that we got the instruction that we did. We were both smart and lucky - Tracy was smart to find a great instructor fur us, and I was lucky that she did.

PS: When I was a ski patroller, we used to say that the only qualification needed for becoming a ski instructor was that the Ski School had an Instructors parka that you'd fit into. Skiing is another example of a once adventurous endeavor, engaged in mostly by hard core enthusiasts, that has been severely dumbed down in the course of converting it into a mass market recreation.

Truck driver trainers are about the same. When I was filling out my paperwork for my very first trucking job, a recruiter told me "come see me when you hit 6 months so I can make you a trainer!" My response was pretty similar to Sludge's. But it definitely explained some of the "I cannot believe this sh*t" stuff that I saw fellow drivers doing.
