From PC it's about a 60 mile ride. More or less SW. I've got a 25 feet boat with a 350 V8 straight inboard and I won't do it. Too far, too much fuel and at about 16 knots/hour, I'd need to leave yesterday to get there this morning.

Small boats (mine included), need to pick their day carefully. That's a long ride in sporty seas.

Alternatively, one could trailer a boat to Pensacola. It's a much shorter ride that way. But it's still a ways south of the Oriskany.

What kind of speed is that? Unless you are talking about acceleration…

Seriously though, the Oriskany is a great dive. 340' to the sand IIRC. The deck is at about 300.

I'm sure he was ribbing you about using the term "knots per hour." You meant simply "knots," since a knot is "one nautical mile per hour."

Dove the Oriskany last year. Correction on depth. Tower was 60 ft. Flight Deck 140 Ft. 240 Ft to the sand. Great dive. Viz was great and the current was moderate. Boat was the H2o out of Pensacola.

60 miles is three hours each way at comfortable speeds depending on seas of course in my little boat. twin engines is way overrated in my opinion, only failures I've had would take both engines out. Hell I've flown over the Amazon jungle with only one engine and a boat won't sink if the engine quits :)
Biggest issue I would have is your a long way from help if there were a health issue

Figure I'd mention the iron mines in Ironton/Brainerd Minnesota. Minnesota School of Diving does things there on a regular basis and would be the ones to talk with in regards to learning more about the mines.

Just gentle ribbing. I guess the boat must be slow if it takes an hour to get to 16 knots.
