After watching the movie, it was obvious that whoever wrote the screenplay had read Stone's (and Barbara's!) book but I think it's safe to say that it was a blend of two well-known expeditions.

Also, it's worth noting that the book in question(Beyond the Deep) is based on a Huautla expedition. It has nothing to do with Cheve or Charco (or J2 for that matter), which seems to really confuse people. The caves are close to each other, but entirely different beasts.

However, clearly Andrew Wight followed projects by the US Deep Caving Team, Inc. when he wrote the movie. You guys are talking about the parallels with Huautla (and there certainly are a few), but what no one seems to notice is that the deco habitat is nearly identical (though made translucent) to the Wakulla habitat from the first USDCT project there.

I've not been diving enough this past year. We'll fix that!

I've read Beyond The Deep about five times and have given copies to several friends. I've often thought that it would make an amazing movie, if the Hollywood people could just make a movie that accurately depicted what happened instead of over-dramatizing it. As if the real events weren't dramatic enough! But once the screenwriters start "adapting" something, it usually becomes unrecognizable.

I LOVED Touching the Void!

I read a couple other Joe Simpson books. Turns out Touching the Void was just his crowning series of accidents. He had many more before that that should have killed him. Still climbing I believe. Please dont ever let the guy in an overhead environment ;-)
