One objection I have heard against having an identical backup is, if there was a software glitch, it will effect both computers the same way. The classic case was one early computer that reset every night exactly at midnight. If you were in the cave with two of them at midnight, they both reset, and you had no clue as to how much deco, or even max depth and bottom time.

I'm pretty sure you can put the Veo in gauge mode and suit your needs. It will give you current depth, max depth, dive time, etc.

It won't perform any deco calculations in gauge mode so it should not lock out.

That could be a real bummer since my usual buddy uses a Predator as a primary too. Luckily he has a Uwatec backup. I use different algorithms on each, ZHL16 on the primary and VPM on backup for quick exits. I don't think this is a big issue these days. I would have noticed any glitches that affect regular dives by now anyway.

I used a Veo 250 as back up until I started doing planned deco dives. I currently use two Tec 2G's and had no issues at midnight. KISS!

My Veo 3.0 will default into gauge mode if you go illegal, and give you current depth, max depth, bottom time. Just no deco or oxygen saturation calculations. Or you can just lock it into gauge mode before diving.

I use two vr3's and a nitek duo in gauge mode

Primary Predator, secondary Duo in guage mode, and tables in my pocket

Primary X1, secondary Duo in gauge mode...the ol duo in gauge mode seems pretty popular

Almost all the older computers will go into gauge mode. Just get on ebay and buy an old used computer and put it in gauge mode. Problem solved.
