This is the unedited E-mail message that I received this morning from one of the Cavern students in that class:
Hi
I just wanted to let you know why the instructor was unable to finish the cavern class. I am one of the other students that was in the class. First we were supposed to be at the instructors house on Friday night at 1800 to review and get an overview of what would be on the test, Mark never showed up. On Saturday we found out that Mark did not have the books that the instructor told us to have, nor had he read them, Basic Cave Diving, A Blueprint for Survival and NSS Cavern Diving Manual. The other student and I had read the books and were ready to move very swiftly through the material because the instructor wanted us to get in the water in the afternoon but because Mark had not read the material he was not prepared for the test so the instructor had to move more slowly through the material and with PSSP closing at 1700 daily we were unable to do the open-water drills and the first two cavern dives on Saturday as the instructor had planed. Now that Saturday diving was blown the instructor change his outline of the class, he finished all of the lecture and decided we would do all five dives on Sunday, we were to meet at the Dive Shop (Cave Excursions) between 0830 and 0900 to head to Orange Grove to do the first three dives and then on to Ginnie to finish. Sunday we arrived at Cave Excursions and found out that Ginnie was closed, so the instructor decided that we would go to Orange and do all of our dives, while suiting up the ranger came over and told us that the system was closing, the instructor persuaded the ranger to let us get. After the ranger left we were told to grab all of our tanks and put them down by the water and get our buts in the water.
If Mark would have read the two books we would have been able to complete the class work and the open-water drills on Saturday like the instructor had planed.
I know you are upset with your family but I really think that he will be better served to stretch that class out a little anyway. My cavern class was two weekends and two of the dives were running line into Ginnie. There is a BIG difference between doing that in a low flow cave like Peacock and a high flow cave like Ginnie. I think clumping it all together in one low flow cave is kind of taking a short cut. Cavern really is where you learn the most skills and taking time to practice those skills in open water before his next class will help him a lot. Not to mention reading the book! Well now I have made yet another cave instructor mad at me I will go to bed! Take care and dive safe, Cindy Butler :)
I followed this thread really close and I promised not to make any comments on the instructor or CaptainSpeleo. Nevertheless, I hope your daughter knew where your son-in-law was on Friday night when he was missing his class.
He was home on Friday night. He didn't leave for his class until 4:30 A.M. on Saturday.
He and my daughter burn up the airwaves with their cellphones, so they always know what the other is doing.

Just for your information, I decided to write John after all.
