I had a leg up on buoyancy since I had a lot of experience before I started cave. The thing I underestimated the most was dealing with flow, and I'd say that's been the most difficult for me. Knowing when to hug the bottom, vs stay near the ceiling; knowing when to backfin; and the biggest for me, knowing when to just grab ahold of something!

Buddy breathing while exiting a cave. Only had to do this on a course and getting the timing right while following the line and exiting was hard work. If you're going to share gas a spare reg and a long hose are nice to have.
I got a very humbling lesson on that the other day!Quote:

No question, the valve drill was impossible the first time I tried it, and it took 6 months of Yoga practice before I could do it at all. Thankfully, noone was taking the shortcut to sidemount back then, so I had to stick with the Yoga and it has transformed my life, physically yes, but also mentally! I am now about to try sidemount, but for the right reasons rather than to avoid conquering a challenging skill.
