One third of your one third reserve is what I would do.

Of course, Some people wont even know if their buddy is missing.
I dove with a guy last Sunday (for the last time) and on the way out, I kept covering my light to see if he noticed. I wanted to see how long it took him to realize he was alone. He never did.
Then, I swam rite over his head and flashed my light on back and forth.
Didn't see that either :x I could have grabbed his manifold and rode him all the way out and he would not have known a thing.
The only way to get his attn. is to smack him up side the head!

I didn't begin the dive as a solo diver, but I became one when I lost my buddy.

So where do you leave the cookie?

At 2/3 of your starting pressure do you mean gone or left. Say 3600 starting are you leaving at 2400 or 1200. I hope I would stick around to 1400 in a no flow and 800 or less in ginnie. Especially with a deco bottle in the eye. Anyone who thinks they will never be seperated is foolish. I would rather call my wife and tell her I was taking a chamber ride, than call my buddie's wife and tell her he wasn't coming home. I have been in a lost buddy situation and it didn't last that long, but read the IRAPS and you will see that it happens. Jeandiver, translate I'm having a brain fart on that one.

On the other hand, your buddy would hate to call your wife to tell her you stayed in the cave looking for him, since he had already gone out.

Like I said before, this question is best discussed by the buddy team. Some teams are essentially made up of solo divers, and their rule may be "head for the exit if separated". Other teams would never get separated, because they are acutely aware of each other throughout the dive. Most teams are somewhere in between.

Happened to me and then again with my regular dive buddy up in cave country... same guy. I'd lay odds that it was the same guy with you as well....

I would say that I would refigure thirds search till then maybe -200 psi lower then training says get out. Sorry buddy better 1 then 2 dead divers. I would place a cookie on the way out if I knew where to put it.

From what I learned in my Basic Cave course, you cover the light and complete a quick light search. Then you re-evaluate thirds. Since you buddy is gone, you can start eating into his thirds to search for him, is how I understood it. Then once you hit your new thirds, you exit with a line arrow pointing out, where you lost him at.

Please advise if I'm wrong.

That is a difficult question. It needs to be somewhere your buddy will see it. If you leave it where you first missed him, he may not get that far. If you head out, and pass him, he still may not see it. I guess you could leave one at your farthest penetration, and another where you saw him last. Be sure it is something he will know for sure is *yours* and indicates you have left.
