So much for the "No Lights Drill"

According to the report, he used an Inspiration CCR. I still wonder how he did his decompression stops; knowing where to stop and for how long (a support diver or a modified trimix dive computer). The Inspiration doesn't have a built in decompression system. It only controls the set-point and it has a buzzer to alert you when the PO2 goes too low or too high.

I was talking with some old school rebreather divers today and they suggested that maybe his rebreather/computers had a voice interface and instead of having to see his gauges, depth, pp02, etc., he just listened.

Does anyone know? These guys also said they had heard of some braille gear, like a depth meter with a touch needle and raised places indicating depth.

Is this for real or were they just pulling my naive leg?

by the way, these old guys spent this past week at a muscular dystrophy summer camp teaching the kids to scuba in the camp pool and local lake, so it's not like they are unaware of advances in technology to help the disabled (old school or not). Or does that just make me more likely to believe their tall tales?

Support divers can carry his bailout tanks and convey the decompression information, but he might also have a way to know from a series of beeps (noises) or by vibration. The beeps or vibration, for the PO2, can come from the CCR (audible modifications from AP Valves), but I'm still not clear about the communication for the decompression stops.

I don't know of a current trimix dive computer which conveys the decompression information for the stops by an audible alert. Some have an audible alert that you can enable for missing a stop.

How about this logic:
Have a beep for when you get to a stop and a double beep when the stop is completed. In this fashion you can get the depth and time information. I know a trimix computer maker across the pond that could make such a device (close to where the dive took place). Perhaps this is how the decompression was done.

This is very interesting stuff Chip.
Thanks for hooking us up.
I thought that the acronym "DILLIGAF" was a nice touch on the Rebreather. Do you think he knows that they took his picture framed around the legs and underbelly of a Camel?
Buddies can be such dirty tricksters :-D
