Canaries are trained from birth to detect low O2, and high CO levels in mines/caves. Actually I am going to have to look at the video again to see what Mike was talking about.

Well, I see the canisters on the scooter, but I am not sure what they are. There were some scooters that were converted to heavier batteries, so had buoyancy tubes to make them neutral. They could be that, or just a way to carry supplies for the "dry" part of the cave.

Thanks, that was exactly what I was hoping to achieve. I think Rick and John are interesting people and I wanted to try and dig a bit deeper and understand their motivation, which i hoped might be of interest to a broader audience.
