Get another instructor.
Give TJ a call at Dayo. He most likely won't have a problem with whatever system you use as long as it's safe.
You could pick up a set of the Razor2 plates for $80 from DSS, pick your own harness, d-rings, and closure, and add the batwing for <$600... <$500 if you are like the rest of us and have all the hardware you need to outfit a small family already sitting in a box at home. FWIW, You could do a similar closure to the new one on the Razor2 using a tri-glide and 2 d-rings. Thread the tri-glide on, then the two d-rings, then double back through the tri-glide. Kind of like this:

Use an MSR bag (if appropriate) and come in around $200.
