It's hard to describe why, but I never felt stable until I had a half-working back kick. Even pushing off durable objects just didn't do it for me. Might be the feeling of control it gives? Not sure. I just know life is better with one. :-)

i only back kick/fin when I'm practicing. when i think i need it, there's too much current, or it's too slow to take effect, or there are other means (little t-rex arm/hand movements, body angle - hey going a bit vertical, just off the horizontal axis is a way better brake) available that work better.

That's great! People ask me what a scull kick is, and it's hard to explain. From now on I'll just say, "Fairywaving with your feet!"
Where the heck is Andrew, figured he would be around to say how it is useless. I used the back kick many times today for a small dive in Devils. While wedged in somewhere that I thought I could fit and I could not I backed out to keep from stirring it up by putting my hands in the silt to get out. While putting in and removing tie offs I used it to stay in place while the current was pushing me around. While getting a cylinder back on after getting through a restriction to keep from bumping face first into the rock. I find it a useful skill on just about every dive.

Oh, and how glad I was that you guys gave us a ride! I'm glad you didn't ask, cause I doubt I could describe how to do this. I'm not very good at it anyway, so even trying to show you would have been a flop. It's got to be one of the more frustrating skills to learn.Quote:
