Interesting. This sounds a lot like a place my father dove for many years before the state required permission to have access and dive the area. The story I remember is that it is a river that goes underground. When I was five years old I think my father showed me the place. From what I remember it was a river and a slight whirl pool were the river went underground. As you enter the underground river there was a fossilized manatee in the bank wall. I may even have a picture of it someplace. Is this the same place you are talking about?
The place was not easy to get to many years ago.
Also, before the state took over my father and his buddies who were amateur paleontologist and divers collected truck loads of artifacts out the area. Many are in museums, private/public galleries and on my mother’s wall. Unfortunately, not all can agree how to handle and display the history of FL.
