I love my DiveRite aluminum backplate and harness.I dive wet[for now]and have a D.R dual rec wing which has a backup bladder in case of a blowout.I can honestly say I love it too.
I really like http://www.deepseasupply.com for my BP/W. I've really enjoyed it and it's high quality material and craftsmanship.
I have the long pattern backplate, Hog harness and the LCD30# for singles and will be getting the T-49 for my doubles.

Congrats on your certification! If you've got a card from Michael O'Leary, you earned it!
I like the Dive Rite Transplate harness. It is very comfortable and extremely adjustable. I have two of them - one on an aluminum backplate for diving steel doubles, and one on a stainless steel backplate for diving with a single tank. In the course of a year I dive in everything from a 3mm wetsuit to a DUI CF200 drysuit with a thick undergarment. The Transplate harness lets me adjust very quickly and easily to varying exposure suits. I also like this because my configuration is nearly identical whether I am cave diving, wreck diving, or just fooling around in the local pond.

I also back deepsea supply they put a lot of thought into thier products. and not remake the same thing again.
thanks for the help guys :diver
I'm seriously considering a hammerhead backplate.
It doesn't matter a whole lot be honest - a backplate is a backplate, a bent plate of steel/aluminum with some holes in it. Find one at a competitive price!
For the harness, look at just running a single piece of webbing. It's dirt cheap and will last forever.
This is a great link on a how-to:

It can save you some cash when you are just starting out in this obsession.
I have to agree with MWHITIES and others that recommended Deep Sea Supply backplates. They make 3 different sizes to accommodate different size people. I am 6' and I use a large and my fiance is 5'1" and she uses a small. The inserts in the slots for the webbing hold everything in place nicely. Furthermore, the price is excellent. As for wing, I use a Oxycheq Vertex wing. 360 degree loop, low profile and 50lbs of lift.
I recommend the Armadillo.
