I could not find if this has already been posted, but I went to dive Little River today, (Sunday Feb. 24th) and found that the viz was down to about a foot due to the river water flooding into the basin and spring.
Not being one to give up easily, I decided to run my primary and see how the viz was inside the cavern and cave system. Well, as I found out, the viz was about a foot so it took me a few minutes to find the cavern entrance and run my line around the post there. I started my way down getting as close to the sandy bottom as possible so I could see something. Until I saw the bottom the only way I knew I was descending (without looking at my depth gauge or computer) was my ears. Once down, inches from the bottom, I slowly made my way to 32 feet. I then found myself in a rocky area that I believed to be on the right side.
After a couple minutes negotiating my way out of that I decided that I should call the dive and make my way back to the surface. Getting back was easy obviously with my line. I could not see any sign of daylight whatsoever until I was right at the cavern mouth and then I was able to see the dim reddish glow of the sun trying to make its way through the tannic-colored water.
My total dive time was 15 minutes and it was an interesting experiment in near zero viz conditions.
On my way out a few other divers asked me what the conditions were like and after my report they decided not to dive.
According to some people I talked to there this all happened overnight as Saturday apparently was okay.
Just thought I'd pass this on...
