The cave and tech diving communities are blessed to have some of the most daring and unique individuals I've ever been lucky enough to know. Tom was one of these.
Years ago, at a NACD seminar, Tom and I got into a very interesting discussion about religion, DNA and genealogy! He was blowing my mind with some of his comments.
I think I'll always think of him from a photo I saw of Tom taken in the 1970s, where I believe he was doing some martial arts. Tom was wearing blue jeans, shirtless, and long hair. He reminded me of a cross between Jacques Cousteau, Bruce Lee and Billy Jack.

RIP Tom.
Very sad news.
So sad. And the passing of some of our finest elders continues. RIP Tom
Tom was a very important leader. We would not have the type of Nitrox that we have such easy access today without the pioneering efforts of Tom and Dick . At an age of 83, it is a huge loss.
RIP my friend
My favorite memory of Tom was at Little River. We were cave diving in two different teams. Tom was doing some Jean-Claude Van Damme style stretching as a long-time martial artist prior to gearing up in his rebreather. A young, pretty brunette with amazing legs caught our attention as she walked over to the top of the steps leading down to the spring. She took one look at the site and remarked, "OMG! I can't go down there. I'll never be able to walk back up all those steps!"
Tom and I exchanged a look of disbelief and disappointment in today's youth. The expression on his face was priceless. The thought still makes me laugh. He was right up there with Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin for Oscar worthy facial expressions.
