Buford in May?

Considering a trip to Buford Sink May8th but have been warned by others that my timing is less than ideal due to gator activity that time of year. Any experience with this spot in the spring? Should I scratch it all together and make the longer trip to Peacock?

Don't worry about the gators. May is a lovely time of the year in the swamps around Buford. You have yellow flies, no-see-ums, mosquitoes, cottonmouths, a few rattlesnakes, and if you are lucky, a copperhead or two. Most of the really big spiders have not strung their web across the trail by May, but you will find a few smaller ones. The wet moss on the downed trees will have a few saddleback caterpillars and millipedes. The poison ivy and oak will be spreading their cheer across the swamp. The alligator snapping turtles will be off their nests by then, and lying around under logs and ledges. Sooo, don't worry about the gators.

You forgot to mention how wet it can be in May, and what that will do to slogging through the swamp :-D

Oh boy. Y’all making me think this isn’t one of my better ideas! Is it really worth the effort or would you bypass a “local” site for the trip to north Florida? I’m starting to think that next winter isn’t really that far off.

Buford is a nice dive, but it is essentially only a cavern.
