Does anyone else do this?

Recently, while scootering along the gold line in HITW, my primary decided to go out. Not the first time this has ever happened and probably won't be the last. I fished around for one of my backups in total blackout, as most of you have done at one time or another. In what seemed like an eternity, but was in reality only seconds, I deployed the backup and exited the cave uneventfully.

So, that lead to a new technique for me. I find this to be a very convenient method, especially soloing. I bought a HOG Morph light (it's as bright as my buddy's LM 9W). I also bought an Oxycheq sock and I mounted the light to it and wear it on my right hand as a standard setup. Very easy and fast backup deployment, almost without coming off of the trigger.

Works for me, maybe someone else can run with it.

When diving solo, I always have a small backup light (q40 led) attached to my helmet turned on specifically for that reason. Used to attach it to my mask before I started wearing a helmet. The darkness does not bother me as much as mucking this vis if I do not have to. Particularly in dusty places. The "night light" just helps with position/orientation until the real lights come back on.

I used to do the mask light too, same one. Never really cared for it. The darkness doesn't bother me, but I figure the quicker I can deploy, the better off I'll be.

Darkness doesn't bother me either, unless I am on a scooter, then I like to have a second light going, so I can duck if necessary.

Jeff's helmet mount dive light is also great because it's just enough to get you out of a jam or read a gauge but not enough to constantly blind his dive buddy. Something to consider with helmet mounts fwiw...

the little HOG lights are really great for those "oh no, I need a light fast" situations. You can even use the HOG sock for them :) ...

I almost always run a separate light on the scooter, just so that when I have to check a gauge, point something out to a buddy, reach back for a spool, etc, I can still see were I'm going.

I'm a big fan of mask lights and actually carry two of them. While scootering, I will leave one of them (a Seac R1) running at low intensity. The amount of light is just enough to not get disoriented, but the light will burn for hours on that setting, even with rechargeable NiMh batteries.

I have a helmet mounted rechargeable 12w LED. It's got a slide switch. That allows me to a) activate it with one hand and b) control the output. If I'm solo I run it low. Just enough that I can see what I'm working on and not contact the cave when my primary goes out. If I've got good vis and high flow, I'll crank it up and shut my primary off. Too much backscatter if the vis isn't good, but it's nice to see no matter where your hand is grabbing.
