Peacock - 09 Aug 2009

Did three dives today at Peacock.

1st dive: Dive up Pothole to Olsen and back. Water is a little bit milky and slightly tannic, but all in all a good dive. Also noticed lots of debris on the floor.

2nd dive: Decided to burn the rest of our first set of doubles before lunch then do a 3rd dive after munchies. Took off up Peanut line and went just over 1400 feet. I'd say the water was clearer, but again, slightly tannic with some particulate in the water.

3rd dive: Original plan was to head towards Challenge. Dive aborted just past the Crossover Tunnel jump due to light failure, sinus/clearing problems, and some serious heartburn from lunch. :smt102


If anyone is interested, smoked boudin before diving is NOT a good idea.

Thanks for the report. I'm hoping we start our class today at Peacock.

I had something for lunch at Ginnie -- I think it was some kind of salad that had jalapenos in it -- that taught me that things I have no problems with under normal circumstances do NOT go well underwater!

We did the Traverse from OG to P1 on Saturday.
Still crapy in OG Basin. (EEK)
Once in the cavern , it was nice.
Trip to Challenge was very nice. Very nice vis (SMILE).
(when I can see lights behind me reflecting nice rays over my head , dat's nice)

From Challenge to Olsen:
All the particulate on the floor , well , the tunnel looked a little smaller than it usually does. But the viz was OK. Had no issues seeing lines/marked jumps etc.
Noticed the spool was still there connecting the Peanut Line to the main line.
Vis in Olsen was very nice.

From Olsen to P1:
Could easily see 20-30 feet down the Crossover line.
And I could easily see the Gold Line from about 20 feet above it running high in the vertical canyons. Could easily see the Dark Water Tunnel and (oh boy)
I could finally see the jumps for Nicholson and Cisteen. (YAY)

It got a little cloudy between PotHole and P1 , but nothing really bad.

Had GREAT VIZ in the P1 Cavern.

Ed J , took some great pics in the cavern. Very nice.

All in all , I think , things are improving quite nicely (SMILE)

P.S. Even felt a tiny bit of a "push" on da behind side after passing Challenge. (uffda) lol

looked crystal clear. there was some definite flow heading down the run and into p3. noticeable siphon in there.

We did the Waterhole tunnel Saturday (8-8-09). There is still debris on the line, and fine silt all over everything. It needs more traffic to clean it out :-)

18 days, and me and my two buddies will be more than happy to add to the traffic in there.

You should have used the scooters, that would have cleared it out right away!

I'm new to overhead, only got my cavern certification a couple months ago, and I've heard that Peacock is one of the best systems in the state, but I haven't been able to dive it yet since it's still closed to cavern and OW. It sounds like, from the reports I've read recently, that conditions look like they're improving. I know it can be hard to predict, but do any of you seasoned divers see it possibly clearing up enough to open it to cavern divers anytime soon?

Peacock is OPEN to cavern divers.... don't know where you got your info. (EDIT: I see from the website that they closed it to cavern earlier this year... I'm sure it's open again since the vis is back at least at P1... just give them a call or call DO and ask)

I wouldn't call it the best system for sure... probably the most popular "training" system. Easy, a lot of entries and safety exits. Can handle quite a big amount of divers without feeling crowded.
