Default Where'd you get your screen name?

I've always found this interesting. Some people create screen names that are obvious, while others choose monikers that seem to make no sense. I'll start:

No, I'm not a plumber, and I don't work in sewage treatment. When I was in undergraduate school I got a part-time job as a pin monkey in a bowling alley. All the other pin monkeys were also college students, and one of them decided to make up new nicknames for all of us. As my last name is Edge, I became "Edge the Sledge." Soon it was just "The Sledge."

However, over the years that devolved into "The Sludge." It further devolved into less polite names such as Slut Bag and Slut Puppy (after my favorite frozen drink, the Slush Puppy). But "Sludge" is what several of my friends always call me, and have for more than twenty years. So when internet forums came about, that's what I've always been.

But several years ago somebody from Europe signed onto the CDF as Spångberg. I saw that and had to have something like it. So I looked up the ASCII table and looked around until I saw the umlaut over the "u." That had my name written all over it.

So that's where "Slüdge" came from.

I was given the nickname of SLIM about 20 years ago and it has just stuck. I am known all over SWMO and some surouding states as SLIM in the Fire, Law Enforcment, and EMS fileds. Those who have met me can see why. Yes I am even known all over Northern Florida as SLIM. At Cathy's, Renikers, (both of them) Wayne, ect.. and all over the Pond as that. If you ask them my real name, some might (select few) might know what it is.

I have never tried to hide it. Have been known for so long as SLIM that at times I forget to answer to my real name. I even get mail that is addressed to SLIM.

When I was given it, I was 6'8" at about 175#. It was bye a 80 y/o man that lived next to our main Ambulance office and he would come over to hang out and just for something to do. You know how them ole men can be. Well, he never could remember my name so he started calling me SLIM and it stuck. Then all over my area I became known as SLIM.

I was always looking for a place to go deeper...always pushing the ledge. I was in Bonaire and hit 207 and still wanted to go deeper. Since that day it has been Everdeeper. And my real name is Travis by the way.

mine is a nickname my daddy calls me. i thought tinkerbell was too long, and deitrich might go over everybody's head since barney miller was a long time ago, and it has something vaguely to do with water, so i picked that one. yeah, he likes nicknames.

now that i've been on forums (fora?) a while & i'm not as worried about weirdo cyberstalkers, i kinda wish i'd gone with my first name. oh well...

When I was down in Florida for convention, I had to relate the story of my moniker. It's kind of a long story, so maybe if I post it here, I won't have to relate it so many times again.

So, I grew up in Iowa. My mom's side of the family was from Minnesota and had a cabin on Ten Mile Lake. One year we were there in winter. I was a little kid, and I fell through the ice. There was a squirrel on the shore that was bouncing back and forth between my mom and the shore. And that's how I was found and my life was saved. (Good thing only ground squirrels hibernate and tree squirrels are active in the cold!)

Well, we named the squirrel "Lassie"--what else? And after Lassie lived out his/her natural life, we had him/her stuffed (I should have asked the taxidermist if Lassie was a boy or a girl). S/he has gotten a little worn over the years, but I used a picture of Lassie as my avatar.

Anyhow, the first time I had to log onto something on the web with a screen name, I used one of my nicknames, Squirrel Girl. While it had been only one of several nicknames, I keep using the same name every time I registered on a different forum. Now a lot of people know me as SG as much as my real name. I have SG on my line arrows, too.

My screen name came from a nickname I was called when I first became a Police Officer (I'm currently an ER Nurse) I was a Medic at the time when I became a Cop...so, they called me MedCop.
