I've always found this interesting. Some people create screen names that are obvious, while others choose monikers that seem to make no sense. I'll start:
No, I'm not a plumber, and I don't work in sewage treatment. When I was in undergraduate school I got a part-time job as a pin monkey in a bowling alley. All the other pin monkeys were also college students, and one of them decided to make up new nicknames for all of us. As my last name is Edge, I became "Edge the Sledge." Soon it was just "The Sledge."
However, over the years that devolved into "The Sludge." It further devolved into less polite names such as Slut Bag and Slut Puppy (after my favorite frozen drink, the Slush Puppy). But "Sludge" is what several of my friends always call me, and have for more than twenty years. So when internet forums came about, that's what I've always been.
But several years ago somebody from Europe signed onto the CDF as Spångberg. I saw that and had to have something like it. So I looked up the ASCII table and looked around until I saw the umlaut over the "u." That had my name written all over it.
So that's where "Slüdge" came from.
