I was invited to join the steps construction crew on Sat-13-07. This was a second weekend of the steps construction lead by Todd Leonard. I arrived to Cathedral gates at 9:35 to meet Todd, Shelly, Mark Messersmith, and Curtis Baldwin. We continued piling along the future boardwalk to the top. It was just enough people to use all the material delivered on this day. At approx 12:30 we used all the wood and cement. Joe Tegg and Billy showed up at the site something like at 10:30 and Joe expressed his intention to join the construction effort the next time. Weather was perfect for working this day nothing to compare to the Emerald's killer heat days.
It is only the beginning of construction and there is still a lot to do. Piling is not yet completed (almost done), then beams bolting will follow and it will not require a big crowd to start it. Once the pattern will be established (so volunteers can see how to build the rest) it will require more labor on a site for maybe 3-4 weekends to nail boards, build steps and benches. It is going to be nice there. The next event planned so far is at the end of Feb. Contact NSS-CDS or Todd for details.
Viz in a sink completely covered by duckweed appeared to be very good and water level is slightly on a low side. I didn't dive it since i had unsuitable for the site gas.
Instead i went to Ginnie to do some swimming practice. I've met two cave divers team (Chuck and Richard) at Devil's parking at approx 17:##. We did some pleasant relaxing walk-through Catacombs and poked into Bypasses. After a safety stop i let guys go and burned 1000 psi swimming back and force in the Devil's run. Ginnie's largemouth bass has developed an interesting tactic of hunting at night - it stays behind the HID head and attacks small fish that gets blinded by diver's light. I had a "buddy" that snatched three minnows from behind my light before i pushed him away for the violation of hunter's ethic.
