    Default Echo River Spring KY

I was in KY last week and toured Mammoth Cave. While in the area I wandered down to the Green River where I found a parking lot with a trail to Echo River Spring. There was an informational sign/plaque that indicated the spring had been explored in 1983 with 3,400 ft of line being laid. Then in 2017, additional exploration was done.

Does anyone know who the original explorers were and who the 2017 explorers were? Are there any photos, videos or descriptions of the cave around? I did not find any references on the forum or via Google. There are some blurry photos on the park sign along with brief, vague info on the exploration but it?s got me curious.

    Thanks

    Mark

That amount of line, in '83, with low viz (I'm assuming) could probably only have been a handful of people back then I would imagine. I'd be interested to hear about this as well.

My first guess would be Ron Simmons. Next might be Sheck Exley. I *think* Shecks logbook is still around. maybe with Mark Long???

2017 may be referring to the submersible that was used in the spring. I don't know the full story, but I believe it didn't make it far, got tangled in the original exploration line and had to be rescued by some local cave divers. Both those guys are on the CDF and maybe they'll chime in?

I think Wes was diving in the area back then. Mark Wenner might know the history.

Land of Enchantment -- not so great for cave diving, but mighty scenic!

I know it isn’t the same as his Dive logs but I looked in Caverns Measureless to Man and there were no mentions of Echo Springs and only some passing references to Mammoth. Hopefully some of the other historians will chime in

    Thanks
