Default Question re: Shearwater Petrel batteies

SA version, bought used, approx 7 years old. Unit operates as designed, BUT...when I attempted to replace the 1.5 volt alkaline battery with a SAFT 3.6 v lithium (tried two different batteries, both registered 3.6 volts on a meter) the computer would not power up. Then after exchanging batteries again, the screen flashed alternately from the logo screen to the white (no info) screen multiple times...then shut off. New 1.5 volt alkaline battery works fine.
The manual says that I need to update the type of battery (voltage) that the computer "see's"...but thats not possible if the unit will not power up.
    Any suggestions...PM's are fine.

    Thanks

Shearwater provides excellent support for their products, even when purchased second hand. There aren't any guarantees buying used, however, I recall hearing of repairs and upgrades being performed free of charge for units bought used. If they advise you to send it in, it might be the best move.

Good luck and keep us posted on how it gets worked out.

Early Petrels had battery contacts that got 'flakey' after a while (corrosion). Happened to mine and I started getting intermittent resets. Never tried a SAFT battery in it, and don't know if different battery types would perform differently with less-than-perfect connections. An e-mail to Shearwater, they asked for my serial number, then they sent me an easily installed replacement, no charge, even though I was out of warrantee. No problems since.

To prevent the contacts from corroding, use DeoxIT Gold once in a while.
Also perfect dor contacts of EO Cords

Thanks for the link re: battery contacts.
Mine has the old style bronze contacts...I have informed Shearwater (they got back to me late yesterday) about this, asked if replacing at least the negative contact battery cap might solve the issue. Waiting on a reply.
They said that the diameter on the positive pole of the SAFT battery can sometimes be an issue, as can the diameter of the positive pole spring in the battery compartment. They also asked if the batteries I have had a suffix after the 14500...they do not.
