I think that same snake paid a visit during deco on a dive for my full cave class last month. The thing is, I was pretty tired from the dive and was zonked out, doing good to stay awake.

Afterward my instructor was talking about it-- I think he was impressed that I could let the thing swim around that close to me without flinching, until he realized I never even saw it there...

Well obviously it is a harmless banded water snake since it has been around so long and there has not been anyone killed. You know based on the threads about snakes, water moccasins would have killed 5 divers chanced 7 drunk co-eds across the river into the woods and eaten 4 deco bottles.

You might be on to something about the deco bottles.

I can guarantee you, if a snake comes around me, you will see me walking on water, 150# of gear or not!

They just mentioned today at my work training class - if it has a round pupil it is not a moccasin, the venomous water snake has a slit eye... Who would even look? Many yrs ago moccasin attacked Bird in a neck behind manifold after he swam over it without noticing. I pulled the snake by the other end and pushed Bird into sand at the same time. Bird thought I was just mean to him - snake swam over to that cypress point across the red ball...
