    Default oms 112 paint peeling

I recently bought a set of doubles one of the tanks was a faber 108 and the other oms 112 ( I know they are the same tank). When I took of the boots the paint is falling off in huge chunks and where is has not fallen off yet it is bubbled. What can I do sand blast and repaint them if so what kind of paint should I use or is there another option instead of painting.

I have used Zink spray galvanizing from West Marine to great success on several steel 72's.

Strip them and re-coat them. Paint, zinc etc.

Talk to Wayne at Amigos. He has a guy that will strip the tanks and professionally paint them for $50.00 or so. This seems to hold up better than any home job I have seen.

Just don't powder coat aluminum ones, I know you didn't ask about aluminum tanks, but somebody is thinking this I bet. I haven't powdercoated steel tanks, but it should be the ticket. Anybody know if it's not, why it's not? The temp isn't an issue with steel.

I was about to suggest the same thing. I have a pair of Faber LP85's that I bought used. Left them with Wayne and they came back looking great.

I picked up a couple aluminum 80's that were rough on the outside but clean on the inside - took them over to Wayne and had them shot blasted and then sent them out for hydro, they came back looking great. No paint, just shot blasted aluminum. I've seen the steel tanks he's had blasted and primed, I think he's using the equivalent of Carboline Carbozinc 11 which is a great coating, lots of solids (zinc) in the coating.

Go to Amigos they do a great job for the price. For the tanks that never go to Florida, I use the following. Around 2003-4 I had the same problem with all my OMS (their boots do not drain, so the paint always is fighting moisture.) First thing is remove the boots and make them cups for loose hardware on your work bench. I removed the old paint with a stripper and light sanding. I then taped the values and hung the tanks from the beams in my shop on wire. I spray a paint called "the BreakThrough" http://buyat.ppg.com/rep_pafpainttoo...DB/V56-410.pdf
I used their "1000 Hour Primer" then top coated with a clear. It is a great water based low oder, low toxic paint. It is brushable but I recommend spraying. Clean your brushes and sprayer right away because once this paint sets (1 Hour) or cures (24 hours) it don't come off. Let the paint cure for 24-48 ours. Have I had scratches? Yes, mainly where they get dragged on the bottom but I easily touch they up. Just recently I had to do a big touch up on the bottoms so lasted about 8 years of abuse. Now since this paint runs $50 a gal use Wayne if your near there, but if your not and can do it yourself I recommend this product. Oh FYI I also use this paint on any of my outdoor steel sculpture (there Iron Black) and again works great.

Theoretically, POR-15 would be perfect. Never tried it though.

The starter kit (http://www.por15.com/SUPER-STARTER-K...ductinfo/SSKB/) should cover a single 112 with two coats. The Pint should do 4 tanks with 4 coats, but you'd have to look in to prep (http://www.por15.com/POR-15/productinfo/1GB/).

I have a set of painted worthingtons I'll POR-15 one of these days.
