Thread: Bering Sea Gold

    Default Bering Sea Gold

Break out some ice cream, turn up the AC, crawl under a cozy blanket tonight and tune into Discovery Channel at 9pm EST. Bering Sea Gold: Under the Ice episode #3 airs tonight 9/7/12

Dave and I were both underwater cameramen on the series. It was a coooool experience haha The crews were really awesome and so was the experience diving under more than 5ft of ice in 28 degree water. I'd say it was like a cave but it's not.

Tune in and check out what its like diving under ice for GOLD!

Very interesting! I'm happy enough in the freezing cold 72* caves, but I'm sure it would be an interesting and probably very enjoyable experience...very cool to see what crazy things people do for a living...

Interesting show! Which one of those yayhoos were you with!!

    couple of questions for ya...

What kind of rig were yall diving on?
Why dont these guys dive dry? The water hose idea seams like a huge PITA!
Did you find yourself trying to talk some sense into these guys? There just asking for something fatal to happen.
Did you get to keep any gold?!?

Glad you watched! There were 4 of us shooting underwater and we rotated every day between different dredges and divers. So we worked with everyone in the end. We prob worked with the Lazy Gators the most. They were all cool guys.

What kind of rig were yall diving on?
--We were on OC, singe tank with a H valve. Diving dry with dry gloves, fourth element halo 3D undergarmets and OTS full face mask so we could talk to the dredger and to the surface. We also had a safety bottle on a rope dangling in our ice hole. It also helped mark where our hole was even though we were tethered. It was hard to see the holes when your on the bottom.

Why dont these guys dive dry? The water hose idea seams like a huge PITA!
--They were a lot warmer than we were thats for sure. I wanted to try one of the hot water suits. Some were home made and others were real ones you can buy from DUI. They would stay down for 4+ hours in 28 degree water using those suits. We were cold after 45min-60 min in a drysuit.

Did you find yourself trying to talk some sense into these guys? There just asking for something fatal to happen.
--Don't believe everything you see on TV. This is how these guys roll. Some were really scared and asked us lots of diving questions.

Did you get to keep any gold?!?
    --yep =)

lol I remember when I thought 72 was cold too. Then I moved north and thought it was the end of the world to dive in 50 degree water. Now after diving a bit in 27.5-34 degrees the past few years 50 degrees feels like a sauna!

What's the deal with the father and daughter duo? They seem like full blown idiots. I have done a bit of diving under ice and some of their practices and methods seem quite sketchy. Why a diver's air compressor intake is inside an enclosed space with machinery (Electrical Fire) is beyond me and quite unsafe.

As far as suits go, hot water is where it's at. Even in a drysuit you will eventually get cold. With a HW suit it's like diving in a hot tub, until someone lets the heater run out of fuel

Cool show. Not sure if Id do it or not, probably would try it. I like gold and diving, just not that cold water and living with men.
