Default Dryer Sheets to ward off Mosquitos

Someone mentioned dryer sheets in another thread, and rather than hijack that thread, I thought I'd start a new one. Recently my girlfriend Hazel (who wears Suzie nametags) got me to try using dryer sheets to ward off pesky mosquitos. You rub the thing over exposed skin and it does appear to work. I have no idea what the active ingredient is that makes it work, but I have come to swear by them. Easy to keep in the car without danger of arisol cans exploding in the Texas heat. I put a couple in my hammock with me at night and I have had great success. It's also nice to smell good rather than like a bug strip.

Just thought I'd throw that out there. I'm betting someone here is an expert in the topic and can enlighten us how this works.

I've heard that they also work on the "dog-butt" gnats that swarm like crazy around the Mill Pond in summertime.

That thread has been pretty hopelessly hijkacked already.

Dryer sheets work well in porta potties as well to keep the flies away. I have no idea why - maybe it softens them to death.

I thought that they just made the mosquitoes soft, fluffy and non cling when you squished them?? And made them all smell like summer breeze.

Another trick from my Army days is to put flea / tick collars around your ankle to keep Chiggers away, putting a little sulphur dust in a sock and lightly dusting you pants will keep ticks, chiggers etc. away too, just don't get ANY of it anywhere near your eyes.

I always forget to try that.

I think I'd take flies over the chafing those things would cause.

    Sorry couldn't let that pass

Dryer sheets absolutely work! It just looks a little funny when you talk them in your shirt, in the side of your sunglasses, or in your pants to help ward off those pasts. I learned about that track from a fellow diver a few years ago at Madison blue… I've been carrying a box in my dry suit bag ever since

The company that makes Off, also makes a small fan with off cartridges in it. I thought it was pretty useless, another gadget to steal our money, but darn if it didn't work. It's the size of a cell phone with a hanger on the back and attaches to a belt or pocket or just lay on a table. I was swarmed while working outdoors on a bike one evening last week, went in the house and got it, and was not bothered at all. I was amazed - worked better than spraying off all over your skin. And it was odorless.

I'd be worried about dryer sheet chemicals on my skin....

It's a good thing our clothes get washed after using dryer sheets on them...

Linda at CE swears by those off clipons, and Giselle can confirm the dryer sheets do work on the gnats at Madison.
