    Default crossthreaded valve threads?

hey I was just wondering if anybody have heard of cross threaded neck threads on a steel tank before? The backround story is I dropped my tanks off for hydro they called said the valves were cross threaded into the tank but the tanks were still good even know the valves were cross threaded in. They go out for hydro and and I come back I don`t get a call for a 3 weeks then I call the dive shop and they tell me that the threads in the neck of the tank are shot from the valves being cross threaded in there. So I ask the shop owner why did his tecs tell me the tank was fine? so then he tells me I owe him 130 for the hydro. I said I will pay for the hydro but not full price because these tanks defintly should not have gone out in the first place. He told me know He won`t give me discount its not his problem. So needless to say its been months and I refuse to pay full price and the tanks are still at his shop. So talking to another dive shop and was told there is no way a valve could damage threads on a tank and to go get them and he will take a look at them. So the other day I get a phone call from the first shop telling me to come pick up my tanks or I am getting brought to small claims court for no payment. So in conclusion I want to know if anybody has ever heard of valves messing up the threads on steal tanks.

    valves are chrome plated brass.
    steel tanks are steel tanks.
brass is way softer than steel.
Not only that, but threading a valve onto a tank the threads are huge and its plainly obvious if something is amiss very quickly, within 1/2 turn and about 8 complete turns before you should ever be putting a wrench to the valve to give it the last 1/4 turn and make it snug on the tank.

I have NEVER heard of this problem and the whole story sounds very fishy to me.

The hydro shop does attach the tank to a fitting to pressurize the tank. They spin that fitting on pretty fast and in some shops hydraulically. So if the threads are torn up I would strongly suspect this process/event. Not the hand threading of valves onto tanks.

Both tanks? The hydro place would screw up the threads on both tanks?

    How does that happen?

hydraulic-powered fittings and people that operate it are probably minimum wage workers that don't do scuba tanks that often, as most hydro facilities mainly do fire-extinguishers

Were they the HP "skinny neck" tanks?

IMO the hydro shop screwed up but ultimately the dive shop is responsible because that's who you contracted to hydro your tanks.

the shop which I no longer go to all the guy could tell me is that he has a brand new set of lp95s that he would cut me a deal on. BTW this is after i spent thousands of dollars in his shop and was planning on spending more money in his shop.

rjack explained it pretty well. A brass valve will not damage steel threads. One thing I disagree with is putting a wrench to the valve. That is absolutely not necessary. Valves should be put on hand tight. A wrench is not necessary. Once it's snug up against the tank neck it's fine.

BTW, how many tanks did you take in that you paid $130 for hydro? If it was only 2 you got ripped off majorly.
