Default Save the date - couple of clean ups for Madison and Cannonball

Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 17, 2012. For the second year, the NACD is joining forces with the NFSA to help clean Madison Blue Springs State Park. Last year, many of you were instrumental in helping to build tank benches, remove debris, paint the changing/rest rooms, fill potholes, clean steps, and complete other chores. We are finalizing a list of things to do this year with park management but it will be similar to last year and also much needed. Kelly Jessop and I will post the final information soon but count on a 1/2 day of work followed by lunch and then some diving if you wish.

If you can help or have questions, shoot me a pm or email me at the address below. Also, you can send Kelly a pm.

Also, Doug Rorex will be hosting the annual clean up of Cannonball Cave on Saturday, July 7, 2012 - more information to come.

In advance, Kelly, Doug, and I thank you for your contributions.

Here's my suggestion: bring in some dirt and smoothe out the steps where the erosion has washed them out.

Thanks Russell, I plan to talk to Margaret later today and will add that to the list.

Russell, I talked to Margaret last week about filling in the steps. She said that they do from time to time. However, every time it rains, the dirt gets washed into the spring. I hope to travel down in a week or so and will take another look. FWIW, she has asked (the state) if some stone steps(hopefully non-slick) can be constructed in the future.
    Safe diving,

Maybe a sandier fill will last longer than dirt?

    Cheers,

It was mostly sand at one time. The floods that went up into the parking lot are mostly the reason the fill washed out.

Large limestone gravel would last longer, be stable under foot, and not be a problem if it washes in to the spring.

The larger the fill material, the more resistant it will be to flooding/erosion. For lakeshore docks, we use gravel under the footing, then top the gravel with large flat rocks. If no natural rocks in the area, would you be allowed to put paving blocks in the water?

(The steps I was talking about are the ones from the parking lot to the wooden steps. They are made of dirt, with I believe crossties adding structure.)

Those were the ones I was thinking of and I think Margaret was too but I will make sure.
    Safe diving,
