I just looked at the video manuals for Ariane. I may be a convert - it depends if I can get it to run on my laptop with XP.
And I have been using Compass (including the original MS-DOS version) for 15 years.

Its cool lookin isn't it?
I downloaded it and registered... makes me want to start surveying some of the stuff I have my eye on and start a new project to give it a whirl.
Ever surprised by the amount of holes involved in cave diving.
I think you guys will really like Arianne, also and this is the best part if there is a feature that you really want in Arianne send a request to Sebastien and he will add it, that is how Arianne evolved to the current version.
I am not 100% sure it will run on XP as it was programed for 7 but it should.
the only thing missing is a OSX version, can't ahve it all I guess..lol

Started a thread on Ariane and the few things I've not been able to work around in a short period of time(without seeing all the tutorials). Overall its far more intuitive and much much easier.

Hi,
I'm one of Sebastien's cave exploration buddy and friend who saw the all starting and developpement of Ariane's software.
In my opinion, and after having played with Compass, VirtualTopo, Vorex... Ariane is just the best tool for cave survey!!
Not only the inteface is just easy, and simple to use, with no need to enter into the data table, but there is a lot of very nice options:
-- one click to swith to GE
-- printable reports in pdf format
-- to have at our disposal an online server where you can upload updates sharing them at the same time with your exploration team, with encoded access to data
-- to link pictures and short videos on specific stations
-- to have an online viewer of your cave that you can look at on any smartphone
-- now you can export data on GPX format to download it on your gps and follow the cave from the outside if you're looking for other possible entrances or domes...
-- 3D view with one click with imported terrain picture
-- all fonctions of error calculation, loop closure, connections, distance, gas needed...etc... just using right click on the mouse!
-- the option to enter your data into the data wizard the way you want: from out to in, the contrary, with inverted azymuth...
-- visualizing your survey in several colors, by sections, explorers, dates, depth...
-- show / hide comments, station names, section names, in relative size if wanted
-- export short videos of the cave growing in fonction of time
-- works on multi-projects if working on connecting several caves or entrances
All this with a user friendly control pannel!
Really, Sebastien just did an amazing job: a modern cave exploration tool made by a passionate cave explorer nerd!!
And all this, just with one objective: to be used by everyone who'd like to, for free!!
And to help every cave explorer, who had at least once, desired to throw his computer throught the window while using some other survey programs!!
We had the luck to find a lot of ongoing cave lately to test Ariane with a lot of data entered by multi team work, with no problems, including some connections between several entrances, proving a very good acuracy of the gps+data+closure calculation used by Ariane!
I'm going to have a drink with him tonight, I'll tell him you're here wondering about Ariane. He's kind of busy lately, but for sure, he'll be happy to answer some questions and give some help to the people interested by the software in few days!
Bye.
(sorry for my poor written english guys!)
