But it's accurate and realistic. That kind of honesty and directness is probably preferable to avoiding a term a few divers may see as being less cool or manly.

I for one was impressed with the OP for posting it with the previous word - it said a lot about his sense of security and suggests he is not driven to determine his self worth based on what others think.

Making only a few trips a year (in a good year), I have no qualms about not calling myself a hard core cave diver.

True story - last month I was on a Cub Scout overnighter on an aircraft carrier and was joking with my son that I had never been in a *dry* engine room before. Another Dad said something along the lines of "So you're into diving?" and I replied "Yeah, it's my hobby." My 7 year old interjected - "Uh Dad? Isn't a hobby something you do often?"

    Ouch.

But it changes the meaning - to most people I know, "popular cave conditions" are warm water, low flow, and high visibility.

Did Madison yesterday. Seems to have cleared up a little since my last visit two weeks ago. Martz is the worst of it. Anything downstream of Martz is dark, but 40'ish of vis. Upstream of Martz is beautiful and blue all the way to the dropoff.

I would never dream of calling myself anything other than "a wet tourist".

I am honored to be allowed to rub elbows and fins with "real" cave divers, professionals, photographers and ecologists.

    And 'Tourist' doesn't?
    "Is this thing on?"

Not 100% sure on twin (but it should be too) but Hole in the Wall is accessible by canoe and last time I dove it (a few days ago), the flow was way up (it normally siphons this time of year) and it should be cleared out with pretty good vis by now. Last week vis was 30-40 foot with a water temp of 66 as opposed to 5-30 foot with a temp of 58-64 a month ago.
