Thread: SASY????

    Default SASY????

I'm sure some of you have heard of this. Surface supplied Air Snorkeling for Youth. I've never seen this before but I'm seriously thinking of buying these for my kids. I've already arranged to meet the people to look at these. Just looking for any input that anyone might have. I've tried to find prices with no luck. I actually can't seem to find these anywhere except resorts and stuff advertising that they have them available but not for sale. They sent me better close up pictures and the gear looks in pristine shape.

I have seen these before but it was several years ago. If I remeber correctly the vest is like a life vest (positive flotation) so they can't go underwater.

It was a neat idea just too pricey for most people to snorkel.

edit: so after reading the ad it states the vest is a pfd.

if it comes with the tanks its not a bad price and neat for the kids.

Scubapro (among others) sold these systems in 2001. Theirs consisted of a pfv, Mark 2/R-380, an spg, and either a 13cf or 19cf cylinder. Plus an instructional video. Retail was $844. An adult version with a 30cf retailed for $900.

(For you trivia buffs, these were the only aluminum cylinders Scubapro ever sold.)

ok, I'm glad to get an idea of what the retail is/was. The tanks just went through hydro. I'm thinking I just ran across a pretty good deal. I'm pretty excited about getting them for the kids. My kids are too young for SCUBA so this seems like it would be a great alternative especially since we go to the beach a good bit here and do a lot of shore diving. The whole family can get involved. Thanks for the info, if anyone else knows anything, I would appreciate it. I'm just wondering why this didn't catch on as far as a SCUBA training tool for kids. Maybe the cost as was mentioned above. Just want to make sure there weren't any safety issues.

So a Youth PFD ($70), a tank band ($30), a small AL tank ($80), and a reg ($150)... and SP sold it for $900? Man, I missed out...

Probably more like $70 for the PFD, $30 for the tank band, $100 for the tank, $30 for a tank valve, $150 for the reg, and $300 for product liability insurance.

I used an AL 80 with a stabilizer jacket filled with air and a regulator for this same thing. The kids loved it...

You folks are leaving out the spg.

Seriously, the pfv should sell for $250-300 - it was pretty much a basic BC filled with foam. The reg sold for $200 by itself, and the spg for $80. Small aluminum cylinders were selling for $125 with a cheap valve in 2001, and this one had a Scubapro DIN/yoke that retailed for $70. So their price was not so out of line.

To be honest, it wasn't such a bad idea - the ease of snorkeling, but made easier with a regulator. I wouldn't have ever bought one, but not nearly as stupid as some things I've seen.

The shop here in my town still offers SASY for the kiddies.

Boy I thought I was a cool dad when I put an AL by the bathtub with a long hose for them.
