Default Where to put/hold your primary light when shooting video?

    Hi all,

I'm shooting video for the first time on some guided cave dives and not sure what most people do with their primary light? Do you hold the camera tray(camera & lights) in one hand and your primary light in the other or use both hands on camera tray?

    Thanks,

    Riley

Put a video reflector on your primary light is one solution.

    Hang it around your neck

    Clip it off.

Use it as additional lighting if you have a goodman style handle and a camera with dual handles.

    Hope this helps.

    Mount it on your helmet?

I mount the camera on the helmet, and just hold the light in my hand like normal.

I might guess that not all cameras are created equal. Some might not be exactly helmet mountable. But the point is do not have the light and the camera in close proximity to avoid back scatter I suppose.

Clip it off, and keep it out of shot. It'll spoil the video - it's very distracting seeing a spot waving around an otherwise evenly-lit scene. Unless of course you don't have any video lights, but it sounds like you do. I usually switch my primary off. If I need to signal a lot, I keep a good LED backup on and easily accessible.
