    Default Sonar devices for surveying

Hey, how well did the sonar thingy work? I have been wanting to get one for surveying LRUDs and haven't been able to find one lately. I have heard they are alright if you can see the wall you are shooting, but not so good for black water stuff, as you don't know if the return is even close. (makes sense to me.)

Off topic, but I have found the sonar units don't work well with irregular shaped walls or jagged formations.

I use one in black water, since that is the only was to "see" the walls. It helps to take several readings, at slightly different angles. If they are all similar, I take the average. If they are vastly different, I just assume the walls are irregular, or there is a lead over there

Does anybody have info on where to buy a sonar unit? I've heard they can be hard to find, but any advice on what to get and what to avoid would be great.
