Thread: Video lighting.

  1. #1

    Default Video lighting.

I have a question for all you videographers out there. I shot some video this past weekend in Cow and Orange grove with a Gopro mounted on a helmet. Along with the camera we used two Intovas with diffusers mounted on the sides of the helmet. While we had no issues with backscatter from the lights being mounted so close to the axis of the lens, we did not have nearly enough light. I believe the Intovas (back-up lights) only put out 130 lumens each.

My question is what lights should I be looking at? I need the lights to be able to be mounted on the sides of a helmet. I was looking at 2 I-Torch lights which puts out 600 lumens each or a Big blue VL 1330 which puts out 1300 lumens.

For what it is, the Gopro takes beautiful video. I just need to figure out the proper lighting technique.

    Thank you for your help.

If you have a regular HID canister light, see if you can purchase a video reflector for it. I had great success with a standard Salvo 35W HID with a video reflector.

    Cheers,

When we go filming with Karin, I have a reflector on my 35w hid. Karin have a 100w halogen + a 2000 lumen led video light and a other 100w halogen that see drop somewhere in the cave or give to one of the diver.

How about 2x of these? You would need to cut a diffuser for them, they have a fairly tight spot. You also should swap out the batteries for higher quility ones ($10 -$20 per light) and make sure to give the bezel a good tightening the first time you hit 100ft. Those two issues solved, they are great lights.

Can you swap the LED modules out of those torches??

I would have serious look at these drop-in modules:

I just bought one of these for testing: http://kaidomain.com/ProductDetails....roductId=11106 bit to floody for good signalling but very bright +/- 600 lumens, might work for you.

Same size drop-in but even brighter: http://kaidomain.com/ProductDetails....roductId=11249

Alternatively take a look at this and if you're a bit handy this build could be really good for a video light: http://damiensiviero.com/big-bad-bri...-led-upgrades/

Especially when you see they have wider angle optics available as well!

    Hope that helps!

I havent seen a cave video yet shot with a gopro that had enough light....I wouldnt bother with anything less then twin 35's with reflectors. Twin 24's with reflectors is what I was using at one time and it was not enough light.

My guess is, if you can't afford any more camera, you probably can't afford any more light.

2 - 5000 lumen Mike lights are the only way to go. You can borrow them any time.
