The type of sidemount rig you use will depend on what type of diving you will do in it. There are OW divers that sidemount with a backplate. that would even work for cave passages as long as you don't plan on going into small passage. I can't comment more on it because I've never tried it. The Transpac will work great for sidemount.

I like diving both OW wrecks and such but feel at complete home in a cave or cavern.. Mostly dependent on my 'buddy's' abilities / training these days.

what is the best site to use to research side mount and get gear addition ideas. Seems like I would need a few things vs. back mount doubles..

If you don't have some experienced sidemounters to be mentors, you would probably be best off taking a sidemount course, and really learn a lot in a weekend.

Mentors is the way to go I think... I've had a few open water students that want to end up in sidemount. I make them stay on singles for OW and Rescue, and will then go out and after that if they want to dive side, I'll work with them on getting it adjusted right. Takes about half an hour to set everything where they want it, and after that, aside from getting used to switching regs and watching two SPG's they usually take to it real well.

In the course I teach, we spend about 3-4 hours just getting gear set up. But I explain all the different options along with the reasoning for those options. My students then choose the options they want to try first.

    Hello jsalty,

I have a pair of HP80's for sale. They are doubled up, with an isolator valve between them. Manufactured in Japan in March 2005. Hydro-ed in March 2010. I am asking $490 for the set. They stand 2' tall with the boots on. I have 3 "D" rings attached as well. They weigh about 80 lbs. gross, together with the bands, boots, filled with gas, & valves.
