ya, but if he is diving doubles, then a LP120 isn't an option though ya?
They are short... A couple of inches shorter than an AL63 and about as high as an AL30 5.25".
Way way too short for me to dive at 6'4", but I can't sit with much of anything shorter than a HP120

HP100's may be the way to go...
They're close to the same height as LP95's. About an inch shorter.
10lbs lighter per bottle than the 95's, about 5lbs heavier than the HP80's
Would still cut 20lbs out of your rig. Just make sure you get the PST's not the Faber mid-pressures.
Close enough buoyancy to the 95's.
The LP85's are longer than your 95's, keep that in mind as well.

HP80's are too short IMO, you'll be much happier with Faber LP85's or your run of the mill HP100's

HPs take an oddball valve or manifold. I'm waiting for the day when they'll all be relegated to scrapyard.

true that. I just got a new OMS manifold for my HP120's for dirt cheap from Northeast Scuba Supply... Was like $30 for each valve and then another $25 for the crossbar...
But ya, they are a pain to find. I like them though since they're cocked back... I only needed the valves for SM though, but now I've got the option should I need it

Our XS Scuba HP steel tanks have the standard 3/4-inch neck threads.

    Only just become?

I had back surgery year ago too. My doubles before that were Worthington LP85s and Faber HP100s. I certainly could notice the weight difference to Faber LP95s when I tried them and Faber LP85s a still a few lbs lighter. However - what kind of diving do you do? A lot of cave diving? How bad was your back injury, how recurrent your problems?

My choice was to go to sidemount because whichever way I looked at it humping even the smallest doubles (well 45s did not really get me into overhead) kept my back in constant danger of reinjury. g the back so much meant I was next looking at a leg injury. I am one of those weirdoes who dives SM even in OW because it just is so much gentler on the back, not only on land but in water.

P.S. HP80s are really weird unless you are very stumpy. I had them as singles and was never able to trim out. I can't believe what nosedives they'd cause as doubles.

No, the X-Series cylinders have the 3/4" necks. (People informally call them HP, but they're a different family of cylinders from the old HPs. http://www.xsscuba.com/tank_steel.html )

I have two HP 80's and two HP 100's I have had since 88/89. The best OW tanks. My HP 100's also make great SM tanks. I never bought an Al 80 until I got into tech diving.
I had my HP 100's doubled for a while and they were good as a mid depth range set of OW doubles.
I can probably dig up the manifold/valves/bands if you need them.
As previously mentioned, have you considered SM?

I thought we were talking current manufactured cylinders, the 3442psi

The current ones are essentially the same dimensions, so everything applies except the issue of finding valves
