    Alan,

I also start a survey project few week ago. We decided to do everything whit tape.

I but a clothpin at the end of my tape <manzanilla 250pesos>. When I go solo, i put a cookie on each tieoff and snap the clothpin on the cookie. go to the next tieoff, read and pull strongly on the tape. on the way back take compass edding and recover all the cookies. work nicely on some short shot, more difficult on long one.

Tell me Alan, what system are you working on ?? just in case we choose the same one

I send picture when I come back home.

The idea of measuring sidewalls with sonar intrigues me, but I don't find so much information immediately. What sort of distances work?

I see a sonar gun on Mike Poucher's site. Does anyone have some links for these devices or suggestions of what models and makes to consider.

Thanks very much for all the help so far.
I found one weakness of using a sonar gun to measure side walls,is that the wall has to be flat enough for a return signal. If the wall has outcroppings,or irregular shaped,it can be difficult to get the measure.

Yes, that is how I know they work

Any idea where they could get a new one?

I never guess. Closed a 4300ft loop with only 21ft of error

I see them on eBay from time to time. Scubapro PDS-2. They retailed for $300, but used they go for $60-75 all the time.
