    Default Hawaii

Well, I'm moving to Hawaii in a few months and I was wondering about the cavern/cave diving there. I've been trying to find something on the "internets" with little luck. Is there any cave diving there? I'm cavern right now but would like to be working on getting my full cave at some point. I'll be there for 3 years. I'm sure I can have plenty fun just doing OW stuff but I messed up and let Shirley show me the Dark Side! So needless to say, I'm hooked on it. I'll probably have gills and webbed feet by the time I leave there. LOL thanks

There are some submarine lava tubes that are diveable. I would recommend staying away from blow holes as they extremely dangerous. Have fun in the islands.

I wonder if Hawaii has sand fleas like the tiny monsters on the island? If you are anything like my DI's were then I'm pretty sure your going to miss them. Sand flea's have to eat to you know. Try not to worry about them, they'll always have recruits to feed on.

    Good luck with the move.

haha, yeah right I'm gonna miss them. Those things are ferocious!!I have to get all lathered up with a mixture of highly toxic chemicals so the recruits don't see me scratching them. But you're right "You ate chow, now let them have theirs!!!! I think this is the only place in the world that has them.

And yeah, I wanna try the tubes for sure. I'm just trying to figure out if anyone in Hawaii offers a cave course or if they even have any "caves" to do the training in.

From what I understand there are some underwater caves to dive in HI, but probably not the best place to do overhead training. There is a good deal of dry caving to be done though. There is a grotto there you might get in touch with Hawaii Grotto.

The open water diving is great at least. And I don't think they have sand fleas in HI either.

You'll have a stroke the first time you go to the grocery store though.

There are plenty of lava tubes but nothing that can be considered underwater "cave" in Oahu (assuming you are going there on military assignment...) There is plenty of very cool shore diving and a couple of cool wrecks that can be done by boat.

    Dive safe,

    Celia

PS No, no sand fleas there.... beware of thieves at dive sites though... there are lots of those...

Well, I hope that the Commisary will off set that a little bit. I'm sure I'll enjoy the OW and the Lava tubes and whatever caverns they have. It just sucks that I just got into this and it looks like I'll have to but it on hold for a few years. Oh well, I guess I shouldn't complain, I mean, I will be LIVING in Hawaii.

And thanks for the heads up about the "thieves" there Celia. It's sad that you have to worry about that anywhere. I'm so trusting, guess it'll get me one day.

There is a tech operation there on Oahu, or at least there was when I was there briefly. You could go ahead and be working on your nitrox, deco etc... And getting used to diving doubles and what not. So it's not necessarily a total wash from that perspective.

And there's a dive shop right there in Kailua too. But you might end up kite surfing or paragliding, those are both real popular right there.

Good ideas. I already have nitrox so I could start working on the deco stuff and possibly other gases. From what I saw, the shops that offer the tech stuff, want an arm and a leg for the courses though. But,That would actually give me time to get really familiar with those aspects of diving. I'm not complaining, I know that I'll have a great time diving there(and any other new sport as well). I tried to contact the NSS there and got a failure demon!! I should be able to get a good bit of experience with caverns/tubes there. It would be a good time to get some good practice with the reels too I guess.
