    Default First trip to Mexico

I'm taking my family to the Royal Solaris Cancun for New Years and was wondering if any of you have stayed there and if so what your thoughts are and also what dive shops you would recommend. I want to take my wife on a couple of reef dives and I want to do some cave dives too. Thanks.

Ps. I read the other posts about MX and wanted the most up to date information.

Any dive shops in Cancun would only take you to reefs. Playa del Carman south to Tulum is the area for cave diving.

If you post over in the Mexico forum on ScubaBoard you'll get the answer to your questions about reefy dive ops in Cancun; also consider posting on locogringo.com with your questions about the resort itself.

As to cave diving, in Cancun you are a good 60 to 90 minute drive away from the caves from PDC south to Tulum.

Is it just you and your wife traveling? If there are others, you might consider renting a car for the day, or taking the bus to Tulum. If you are traveling with others, they can take in the ruins at Tulum, along with a snorkel in Gran Cenote, while you arrange a cave dive or two for the day.

    Default Heading to Mexico

I'm heading to Tulum tomorrow. Can't wait.

My plan is to replace all the big red arrows with bigger purple arrows.

    Default I've stayed there

When I was there about 10 years ago, it was pretty nice. We did the all inclusive and the food was good to. There was a dive operator located at the resort. Cant remember the name. I believe you would be better off going with Connie or Cave Heaven as far as guide services go. The resort operator will just take you on a glorified cavern dive I think. Have fun.

    Thanks for the replies.

Best I can tell the resort is about 15-20 miles north of Tulum. I guess I will need to rent a car to get down to the caves.

Hate to be a killjoy, but according to Google, your hotel is in Cancun proper. It's around 80 miles to Tulum or 130 kilometers. It is a pretty decent highway, but you'll be going through Puerto Morelos, Playa Del Carmen, and Puerto Aventuras which will slow you down. Puerto Morelos and Playa will slow you down to a city crawl.

The caves start near Playa del Carmen, so it isn't necessary to go to Tulum for your first trip. Contact Etienne "Attchoum", and get information for that area.

Damn! I looked at it again and I believe you are correct. I don't know what I was looking at before.
