I need a new light, I don't have a cannister light in my budget as of yet, and hate buying a "less than adequate" handheld, the light cannon seems to be the top of the catagory as far as hand helds...lightweight, bright, unless someone has any other recommendations for me...I would like to buy used, as that suits my budget, the only one's that I see on ebay are from questionable sources, and may have been flooded, but I have confidence in this community, and would trust a used light from any one of you guys and gals...e-mail me jkjetton@hotmail.com thanks,Kyle

Are you any good with your hands and minimal tools? Do you have minimal tools? Make a can light. I have just under $100.00 in mine. If you are interested let me know and I will find the group web page and get it to you. The plans are free. Just materials and time.

The problem with making a can light has always been the lighthead and ballast issue. If you have plans to make a complete can light for $100, or even $200 or $300, including the lighthead and ballast, I think many here would be interested in the plans !!

This assumes that everyone has to have a HID light. You don't. Look on ebay, a new quartz light is less than $200.00 with the can and battery. Used quartz lights are around. Yeah, I like my HID a lot better, but I dove 25 years with a 6 volt sealed beam, and another 10 with a quartz.
BTW, if you are looking for a lamp and ballast see:
http://www.trailtech.net/motorcycle_hid_parts.htm
The entire light and ballast, and a chrome holder is about $100.00. I haven't tried to put one in a baggie yet, but maybe a ziplock?
I would like to buy used, as that suits my budget
Why buy used if new UK HID is available online at lezurepro (http://www.leisurepro.com/Catalog.aspx?op=ItemDisplay&ProductID=UKTLCS&ItemIndex=15&CategoryID=972&Context=965&Filter=1%3d301) for some $160?
I was thinking of getting one for sidemount "walks" after conversation with one gentlemen from GB who uses it as primary light. You only have to remove pistol grip, lanyard and make an elastic wrist strap or Goodman like frame handle. It works on disposable batteries so you gonna waist some money on it (still not as much as on even cheapest DR MLS HID). It is not as bright as DR 10w HID and it has warmer color temperature.

I have a MLS can, battery, I think charger and light head (not HID) thats been in my garage fo a long time. If I don't have the charger (but I almost sure I do) I think you could find one easy. I don't know what to ask to keep in in your budget, maybe some people here can throw out some prices.

Bob, wish I did, I have made a quartz, not a HID. HID's are great but the price is just way too much for a poor cave diver like myself(5 kids). I will just keep going with two heavy batteries and some long charge times. I am going to check out the web site in the post from OFG-1 though.

I just replaced my ballast and bulb with the combo from Trailtech for $100.00. The bulbs can be purchased for $59.00 in 6 or 13 degree 10w HID. These are Welsh Allyn and not some other knockoff. Mark Michaud

What did you put the ballast and bulb into ? Does it just fit in an existing lighthead case ? That would be pretty cool :-)

I have an AUL MR11 lighthead. The ballast and bulb is the same as is used by DR and other MR 11 style lights. MR 11 is the classification of the lighthead style that is standard. Not the best design, but if you're careful it is adequate. Test tube style is better because your light is not "waterproofed" by squeezing glass between two o rings. That caused my first failure. The cure is however less expensive than it used to be. Mark diverecoveries@charter.net

Kyle,
I WISH I could give you a good review of the Light Cannon as an Intro HID light. When I re-entered this endeavor (Cavern/Cave) in 2003 after a 15 year hiatus, I knew I wanted a cannister light, but like you, I wanted to channel my $$$ into other primary hardware, and I got a UK...
The price was high (for rec lights), but the light WAS bright and cool (color temp), and I got GREAT burn-time on Duracells...a good LDS stocks an optional OEM suitcase grip that replaces the weenie pistol grip, and works well with a reel...HOWEVER:
I (and SEVERAL other owners) have experienced problems with the plastic cam which triggers the micro-switch. While I applaud UK's design where the actual switch is inside the tub, the cam gadget is (IMHO) BOGUS...there are no mechanical limits to the external switch knob, and the cam, which seems to be a soft nylon-like plastic, is secured by what appears to be a wood screw of all things...after some use, the cam is "wormed out" by the screw, and the external switch just rotates without actually moving the cam inside...it CAN be tightened with the excrutiating use of an off-set screwdriver, but soon it worms out again...
Wish I could give a cheerier story, but for the price of the UK, you can get SEVERAL state-of-the-art backups, and save the pennies for the real McCoy...
IF you still want one to putz with, PM me and I will make you a deal on mine (never flooded) which now gathers dust...just realize the design flaws inherent...

fun2dive has one she's willing to sell - you can PM her here....
Its in good shape and has no switch issues - I've seen it "up close and personal."
She doesn't need it anymore as I gave her my 10W cannister when I bought a new 21W.
